That's not the ideal solution for everyone. (I have family photos with
20+ people in them.)

I never said it was. However, when it came to group family photos I
simply named them something like "Corliss group photo Christmas
1956.jpg" and a search for all images with "group" in the name lists them.
FWIW - I named several thousand old family photos by date, cataloged
them in a spreadsheet and created HTML pages from that. I can search for
photos by a person's name, the date, location etc. etc. etc.

And because of deliberate and careful folder creation and naming, so
can I. However, I don't require any spreadsheet or html page.

But then, my degree in biology helps me be obsessive about organizing
and naming things. YMMV.
I don't
recommend that as an *all-purpose* solution - it's one that worked well
for *me*.

I use FotoAlbum for other image collections. My daughter-in-law uses
FotoAlbum for family photos. Different strokes for different folks (and
different situations). . .

Trusting information to a specific program can reach out and bite you
on the ass if the program becomes non-functional or unavailable for
some reason (won't work with new version of OS, you format drive and
program is no longer available, etc.) That's why I avoided using a
program to categorize my images. The data took me about three years to
create and I wasn't about to take any chances with it.

Hi John,

I hope your family did a better job of captioning photos than mine. I
organized the family photos so the next generation would know who the
people in the photos are. Most photos were not labeled. A several
thousand piece jigsaw puzzle - going back several generations. That was
one of the reasons I didn't use people's names in the file names (the
other was that I didn't want to use long file names).

I'm with you there. Data portability is a big deal for me too.

Perhaps worth noting that FotoAlbum does have this option: <q>Save as
XML: If checked, then the Index File "fototime.xml" will be saved as
standard XML that is viewable. </q>

I started using Picasa as it has a very attractive GUI, but was converted to
FotoTime by the ease with which external graphics editors (such as IrfanView
or PhotoFiltre) can be plugged into it. Also all the album settings are held
in a single file which can easily be backed up and this automatically
updates if files are moved in windows explorer.

But FotoTime is not freeware, so why mention it?

Ok, thanks. I was mislead by the caption for FotoAlbum Standard...

"FotoAlbum Standard: Free FotoAlbum version for paid subscribers to
the FotoTime online photo sharing site. Requires activation for free
usage."

I was looking for a program called FotoTime, not FotoAlbum. FotoAlbum
Standard is the freeware program, and works fine as a standalone photo
organizer without registration (so far), in spite of the caption
suggesting otherwise.

Cheers,
Larry

The site is FotoTime, the software is FotoAlbum. :)

I was confused by the licensing arrangements too!

I picked up the links

http://www.fototime.com/pages/ftWhatsDifferent
http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/install/fasetup.exe

from this group (Susan Bugher - Hi Susan!) which allows a download of
FotoAlbum Version 3.4.1. I assume is the last freeware version. These links
do not appear to be available from the main FotoTime site.

The current version of FotoAlbum Standard is 4.5.2.2 which is time limited
for subscribers to the FotoTime online service.

This is explained here

For those that don't subscribe to our online storage service, the changes to
the FotoAlbum licensing structure effect you the most. FotoAlbum is no
longer licensed as freeware and you now must purchase a license to use it.
You get a free 21 day trial to try out FotoAlbum and the new Pro features.
You also get free support during your 21 day trial period. At the end of the
21 day trial, you must purchase a license to continue using it, or it will
become a read-only application and not allow you to make any changes.
Purchasing a license key re-enables FotoAlbum and the new Pro features and
entitles you to free e-mail support. In addition, you will get free upgrades
to all 4.x versions

I downloaded v3.4.1 over 3 weeks and it has not become read-only yet, so
fingers crossed! Presumably v 4.5.2.2 is the paid for version.

That is my conclusion, but if anyone else can enlighten me, I would be
pleased!

Hi Tritoneur,

v. 3.4.10 is the last freeware version. They released v 4 as shareware
and changed v. 3.4.10 from "free" to "free for subscribers" at the same
time. (I see that the "free for subscribers" version is now a liteware
version of the current FotoAlbum Pro v 4.5.2.2)

I posted about the ware status in May. Subject: FotoAlbum revisited

<q>
FotoAlbum was removed from PL2003 (and the PL2004 nominations list)
because when it apparently became $ware. I recently found it listed as
freeware on a web site. The link pointed to this orphan web page on the
FotoTime web site:

http://www.fototime.com/pages/ftWhatsDifferent

DL: http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/install/fasetup.exe

It seems a bit late to reinstate this app as Pricelessware but I think
it *can* be considered as freeware.

I've listed v 3.4.1 as the LFW version on the acf Program info pages.

Comments?
Does this program only work if we have a fototime account?

No, it works just fine *without* an account. The reason I posted for
comments is the "free" part.

Hi Susan,

Thanks for the clarification and the link. It does seem, to me, to be the
best of the bunch at present!

Hi Tritoneur,

YW. :)

FWIW since you seem to be doing some comparison checking. . .

MyAlbum (PL2004) - is somewhat similar - IMO not as easy to use but it
has some features FotoAlbum does not - you can add sound files, do
poster printing. . .

Program: MyAlbum
Author: MyAlbum (Pierre Meindre)
Ware: Donationware

And it produces slide shows with transitions, which AFAIK FotoAlbum
does not do.

Hi Terry,

FotoAlbum has transitions. From the FotoAlbum help file:

<Q>
Use Transitions: If this is checked, then the screen saver will use the
chosen transition effect between each picture.

Effect: This controls which transition effect is used between pictures.

Delay: The amount of time the transition will take (0=fastest
transition, 10=slowest transition).

Dissolve Prior Image: If checked, the prior image will "dissolve" away
before the transition starts. The time required for the dissolve is in
addition to the transition effect time.

</Q>
