Pentium or AMD why?

If you want to be more geeky, its really the chipset on the motherboard that is the most important part.

Personally I have used the Abit motherboards for the last few years and been happy with them. Of course, as I have not used many others, I cannot make any comments regarding their relative performance. I like Abit coz they have tended to be reasonably cheap, I have not have too many serious problems with them and their website give the info I want to know about their mothboards in a good and simple way!

Oh and for prices I usually tend to start by looking at PCindex (http://www.pcindex.co.uk/) and have always found that their best price is within a few pounds of the absolute best I can find after hours of hunting, so I now dont bother hunting and just go through it.
