A couple of days ago I was early for a doctor's appointment. Consequently I
mosied over to a Barnes & Noble where I discovered a British Computer
Magazine entitled PC Utilities. The magazine was bundled with a CD which is
emblazoned with the inscription "504 Utilities, Over 400 Freeware Tools".
Yeah. Thsi sort of gumph seems to be their main selling technique.
Local newsagents here were selling a back issue bundle of _PC
Utilities_ at Christmas time [in fact one outlet still had at least
one in stock today] The bundle contained three issues: numbers 36, 37
and 38. All for AUD14.95 (about USD11.90 at current rates).
Respectively, these had attached CDs containing "501 great programs",
"883 top programs", and "601 top programs" [#37 also had a second CD
"Drive Backup" containing Boot Manager, Drive Backup, and Partition
Manager].
I'm not sure how much redundancy there is in the total collection of
almost 2000 titles, but a quick squiz suggested there were *very* few,
if any, of them that I would be interested in using and don't already
have installed.
In fact, much shareware/freeware is such crap that I've wondered
whether the infamous AA Fussy isn't just taking the piss out of
authors and their pet projects generally. ;-)
I have looked at the index of files on the CD and it appears many of the
files are freeware, most of which I am already familiar with.
All of this is to advise the group that I am willing to upload the entire
CD, or as an alternative Email it (FTP?..I don't know how) to any of the
guru's on the group for review, action and comment.
Bear in mind, I don't know how to post a cd to the group. I am using both
outlook express and mozilla thunderbird 0.4 as newsreaders.
Cheers, Phred.
