There's no way in hell I'd flash the BIOS for this issue, but that's just
me I suppose.

No comprende.

What's the down side? It only takes 5 minutes.

Minor Advantage

If it fails, or the power line fails in the middle, etc. you have
converted your box into exactly that - a box. Empty and useless.

Failure includes upgrading to the wrong bios.

Thanks for updating my knowledge of the potential risks.

From my experience, Dell does not confuse by making the wrong BIOS available. If
you go to the Dell web site support section and enter the system's Dell service
tag, then search for BIOS updates, Dell will provide the latest and correct one.
The Dell web site is dependable in that respect. Still, I concur with others
that a BIOS update is unlikely to fix what appears to be faulty CMOS circuitry
leading to battery failure. But I may be wrong.

I agree with what you said about Dell.

The download file I need for the 4600C is at
http://ftp.us.dell.com/bios/D460CA09.EXE

Dell e-mailed me the link which is at:

Please do not top-post. Your answer belongs after (or intermixed
with) the quoted material to which you reply, after snipping all
irrelevant material. I fixed this one. See the following links:

Yes, the flasher cross-checks the BIOS to be flashed with the BIOS presently on
the motherboard, and grinds to a halt if there is a mismatch. A very good
safeguard taken from the Intel design heritage of a great many Dell boards.
Intel's BIOS flasher does the same. I wish that other flashers would verify
with people whether or not they want to be flashed before actually flashing.

Fool.

I don't top post. I also don't engage in a ridiculous, futile
campaign against those that do.

I also don't suffer usenet fools gladly, so engage my fool
filters regularly to eliminate the necessity to suffer them.

Goodbye, fool.

It's a shame we couldn't make you glad. I'll report this to
