When running error check there are 2 boxes one says
automatically fix file system error
the other syas
scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
Both boxes were unchecked. Do they need to be checked. I ran it the
first time unchecked. Then tried to open MM and no luck. Should I
reboot or do system restore to make it work to try and do the next
thing ya'll suggested. Thanks again
===============================
I think you are being overloaded with all
these suggestions...my previous message
clearly says:

Check both boxes...click Start.

Then you will get the dialog that says it will
run when you restart your computer.

Am I opening as if I am starting a new project?
============================
Yes...then browse to your .mswmm file
and see if you still get the error.

I ran error check. Should I run this like I defrag a few times a week. I
opened MM like I was starting a new project and then went to file open
project and opened several of the movies I am making and they all opened up.
Was this the right way to open and look for them or did I do that wrong. I
will have to wait a while to see if it will open back up and then check back.

My apologies John-I saw that you said to check those two boxes. I have done
all this and have been able to open MM several times for about a half hour,
which was better than before. Is the proper way to open a project to launch
MM and then open the project from the file tab?

================================
I would not call that the 'proper' way...I just
thought it would be worth a try. It's possible
that you may have some corruption in your
..mswmm file. What to do? If the project is
mostly finished I would try saving it in a movie
format.

To save as an .avi movie file...
(and several other options)
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Show More Choices /
Other Settings /
Open the drop window and choose...DV-AVI /
Next /
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...

To save as a .wmv movie file...
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Tick...'Best Quality For My Computer'
Next/
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...

As I said in the other reply I don't know that
there is a correct way to open projects but
I open always mine from within the Movie
Maker program. Do what ever works for
you is my motto.

As you can see from my signature...I am
just a volunteer and am not a trained tech
but personally I have found that running
Error Checking first and following it with
Defrag is the best method. Once a week
should be adequate.

It's also important to keep your temp and
temporary files deleted.

I never knew about error checking but will run per your suggestion then

I have had know problems with MM since early yesterday. Thanks for all your
time and help.

I guess I spoke to soon. Just now it started to doing it again. Are there any
other steps to be taken from your experience.

Intermittent issues are hard to sort out...
maybe your project is too large and you
are exceeding your system resources.

Have you tried disconnecting from the net
and closing all programs especially virus
scanners before opening Movie Maker.

No one knows your system but you...I can
only guess at what could be causing the
problem.

haven't tried disconnecting from the net or turning off my antivirus. I try
to keep my project size limited to no more than twenty minutes. Some range
from from 7.2 MB to 5.29 MB in size.

====================================
I suspect you are referring to the file size
of your .mswmm project file which does not
include the source files. Try saving the project
in the .avi format and you will see a drastic increase
in file size.

As for resource issues...in addition to video clips,
photos and sound files...adding lots of effects and
transitions can drain resources.

I rarely use the avi format anymore. I do however use transitions and some
effects like slow video to half, ease in and increase brightness.

I found the error which says application hang. The NTBackup.exe tool stops
responding if there are lots of registry entries under the FilesNotToBackup
subkey on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. There is a hot fix to
download, but do you think or suggest I do so?

I have no experience or info about such and issue or the hot fix... someone
else might comment
