Horse hockey! Installing Outlook (OL) will make OL the default Mail Client

Is this a used/previously owned computer and have you formatted & done a

1. On the machine-in-question:

Start | Run | (type) WINVER | OK

Write down the complete second line of text displayed in the About
Windows
window

2. On the machine-in-question:

Start | Run | (type or copy/paste) MSIMN.EXE | OK

What, if anything, happens?

3. Is Windows Live Mail or any other Mail Client (e.g., MS Outlook; MSN
Mail)
installed on the machine-in-question?

4. Does the machine-in-question belong to you? If so, did you buy it
brand-new from Dell or used from someone else?

5. Have you (or has anyone else) ever reinstalled WinXP on the
machine-in-question?

6. What, if any, anti-virus application or security suite is installed on
the machine-in-question and the subscription current?

7. Is Automatic Updates enabled on the machine-in-question and is it
fully-patched at Windows Update?

8. And finally, are you posting to these newsgroups using the
machine-in-question?

Reloading xp would be a big hassle since I spent several days in picking
and
choosing the data from my old mchine and then making all the settings
changes as needed.
Under program files there wasn't any outlook express folder so I moved
the
contents of my old outlook express folder there but obviously it doesn't
work because it can not load the necessary libraries. Is there any way
to
get around it. Plus reloading XP with restore disk won't get me outlook
express. And I don't know if i should use my old Dell XP CD with this
newer
machine (which is fortunately Dell too)? Also should I cange the name of
the
thread to more accurately describe the problem?

This /is/ an XP machine, correct? Even if IE7 came preinstalled, no XP
disk has ever been released that did not include IE6 in it, which has
the
OE components. I have never heard of it at least.

What happens when you do this?

c:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe

Start | Run and Paste it in | OK.

Anything?

You just got this machine, right? Would it be a hassle to reload XP?

Thanks bruce. I see exactly the same screen but the entry outlook
express
is missing. After doing some research it seems like my PC came with
IE7
pre-installed. And IE7 does not include OE. So I tried to download
couple
of OE installation packages, but all of them when run say that your
computer is already running a newer version of Internet Explorer, so
setup can not continue. So now the question is how to install OE if
your
computer came with IE7 or IE8 preinstalled?

Did you do this?

*After* you open Add/Remove Programs, go to Add? Remove Windows
Components
at the left side of the screen. Is Outlook Express checked there? If
you
say
it isn't listed, you're not looking in the right place. See this
screen

After you check it:

shortcut
will be on the desktop.

Sorry but the other question seems to be misleading because
people
are giving the same answer again and again.
Please stick with your original thread. Asking the same
question
a
second time will only get you ignored.

My question is how to install it in this situation?

Wipe & reload.
It says can not load library, are there some registry entries which could
fix this problem?
go to C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\ and click on msimn.exe

how
do I install it?

[Replying at Bruce's request. Answer all questions by number in your
reply.]

6. What, if any, anti-virus application or security suite is installed
on the machine-in-question and the subscription current?

7. Is Automatic Updates enabled on the machine-in-question and is it
fully-patched at Windows Update?

8. And finally, are you posting to these newsgroups using the
machine-in-question?

This /is/ an XP machine, correct? Even if IE7 came preinstalled, no
XP
disk has ever been released that did not include IE6 in it, which has
the
OE components.

See this
screen
shot:
http://i35.tinypic.com/287j4hy.jpg

After you check it:

Right click on the Desktop | New | Shortcut. Browse to *C:\Program
Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE* Click Next | Click Finish. A new
shortcut
will be on the desktop.

Thanks for the info, I will try to post there again but I was

people there would think that i am posting too much. But if you
could
please help me with this problem I would appreciate it
There are two Outlook Express newsgroups on the
msnews.microsoft.com
server. I see them every day and there is nothing from you posted
there.

Did you follow the rest of my advice?

Yes, I tried but they say that this is an XP instalation
problem.
Have you ever considered asking in an Outlook Express
newsgroup?

Outlook Express General newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general

*After* you open Add/Remove Programs, go to Add? Remove Windows
Components at the left side of the screen. Is Outlook Express
checked there? If you say it isn't listed, you're not looking
in
the
right place. See this screen shot:

After you check it:

Right click on the Desktop | New | Shortcut. Browse to
*C:\Program
Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE* Click Next | Click Finish. A
new
shortcut will be on the desktop.

In that case, he's wrong.

No he means it actually removes the files msimn.exe etc.
Anyway I just need to find out how to install it back

He probably just meant that Outlook Express is removed as the default
e-mail client.

Go to Start | Run and type

SFC /scannow

and see it that will fix it.

You can also try re-registering OE: www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx

My question is how to install it in this situation?

No because it will remove all the other software like office etc. And it
will make imposible to get everything back.

On any used computer I set up for a new user, I first do a clean install of
the OS to reset it to factory conditions before I proceed to
customize/import data.

You can't back up your data? You should be able to back up the stuff you
need to keep; after which, reinstalling the OS from a recovery partition, or
recovery CDs should be done.

BTW, I've never installed anything which removed MS Outlook Express. My
guess would be that the original owner manually deleted files from the
folder; no proper remove was carried out. With a used computer, it is "Buyer
beware".
