I don't know about your friend, but most "Asperger'sSyndrome"
diagnoses are self-diagnoses. The number of proclaimed AS cases has
gone up by a factor of 20 since 1980.

It's the trendy self-diagnosis, much the way "Chronic FatigueSyndrome"
is.

As in:

"He's a genius, but he plays Worlds of Warcraft all day in his mother's
rec room because he's gotAsperger's. So sad."

"I can't work and am on permanent disability because of Chronic
Fatigue."

Add to this the casual self-diagnoses--or diagnoses with the help of a
suitably-chosen doctor--of "Attention Deficit Disorder" (ADD and ADHD)
and "Bipoloar Disorder," and one sees that society is providing many
excuses for failure.

We taxpayers are expected to work harder and longer to pay for the
upkeep of a rapidly-expanding number of AS, CFS, ADHD, and BD
layabouts.

Tim May - you are an idiot!!!!!!!

Where exactly do you get the "most AS diagnosis are self-diagniosis"
from?

Your head?

LOL :-))

That's not the way to do serious research.

All the people I know with AS have an official dx by recognised
clinical psychologists specialising in Autism and Asperger's.
Including myself.

why don't you just say you're jealous and be done with it?

:-))

In his case, he went through quite a lot of examinations before the
diagnosis was made so I doubt it was self diagnosis. Frankly most of
us are clinically insane one way or another, if not many ways, so I
don't really care if my friends has AS or BS, there's no excuse for
being mean or stupid as a result of being too lazy to think =P

I aggree with you!!

SinceAsperger'sis is described as a mild form of Autism, it leaves
a lot of doors open for diagnosis. In fact any circumscribed area of

could be a symptom ofAsperger'shttp://www.aspergers.com/aspclin.htm
Any nerd characteristics is certainly very suspect. Anyone who dives
into one particular subject. Doing math is certainly a health hazard.

I sometimes wonder if all this really comes from some dissatisfaction
by others who would like to get closer to the sufferer, but doesn't
quite catch their imagination. Hence it's as much other people's
problem as the sufferers. There should be anAsperger'scontact
deficiencysyndrome...

The best way for you to keep people from knowing for a fact that
you're stupid is if you didn't say another word for the rest of your
life!

It's not actually as bad as that. The DSM (Diagnostic Service Manual)
contains all the criteria for US diagnoses of mental illness, both
Disorders (more serious) and Personality Disorders.

A trained doc (MD in psychiatry or Doc of Psychology) will
compare a patient's symptoms against the diagnostic entry,
typically something like "markedly exhibits 5 of the 9 symptoms".
The advanced training is necessary to properly judge "markedly
exhibits". Laymen typically overdiagnose, overrating signs without
any knowledge of the boundary level. A doc told me that it really
takes a lot, like something debilitating to get a true positive.

The other thing is that no behaviours or symptoms are bad in and
of themselves. All are desireable under the right conditions in
reasonable amounts. There are times when paranoid behaviour is
perfectly healthy and functional. It is only a constant excess
that earns the label "diseased".

This is a natural outgrowth of human variability. What is "normal"?
Something pertaining to the norm, mean or arithmetic average.
But does it have to be exactly at the average? Isn't something
one standard deviation (sigma) away also "normal", in the sense of
being expected and part of the distribution? Normal doesn't exist
without the distribution. So one sigma is in, and probably 2 too.
3 sigma starts to look wierd, and 6 sigma is right out there.

Now do this for a few different attributes. Somebody who's
at 3 sigma on a bunch of related ones starts to look like a
syndrome. But if they're only at 2 sigma, can you be so sure?
And at one sigma, it doesm matter how many they show, they're
still "normal", part of the normal distribution.

I think people obsessed with "normal" are potentially
suffering from something. But I'm not a doc :)

Or as the good doc said "Washing your hands twice is not a problem.
Nor is going back to check if you locked the door. Even twice or
three times. But do it a dozen times every time, and there may
be a problem we can treat."

I have an official DX-4 (486- 133 Mhz). Does that mean I'm autistic ?

Mark.

Ahh.. but it was really a DX-3, but Intel named it DX-4. Does this
