Okay, the basic jist is, I've had to go back to AOHell dial-up temporarily
due to my leaving the crappy Tiscali.

Unfortunately this has created a rather huge problem....... I'm unable to
use my mail server.

Whilst it worked for a bit, the AOL software has completely and utterly
screwed my mail server up and thus, I am now getting DNS Server (10004 -
Interrupted function call) errors.

What I'm now having to look for is an SMTP server that I can use externally
(i.e. not located on the same PC as this piece of sh** AOHell) as at
present, I can receive e-mail, but cannot send it (quite the nightmare to
say the least).

Anyone have any suggestions please?

Oh and before anyone mentions them, GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo and the crappy AOL
mail are not an option (don't trust em)

Who hosts your website Steven? Can't you get an authorised SMTP feed from
them? One of the sites I administer is through oneandone.co.uk and the
authorised SMTP feed works with no problem on an AOL dial-up.

Paul,
Unfortunately, my hosts (Inspiratech 2000 Ltd - www.inspiratech.uk.com) only
provide internal SMTP facilities (i.e. I can only e-mail others whom I've
given an it-mate.co.uk address). I've asked about "full" SMTP facilities but
apparently, for what it would cost, it wouldn't be worth it.

Have you tried sending mail using smtp.aol.com on port 587?

Any mail client.

AOL incoming is imap.aol.com on port 143

Would be great if I was using AOL's e-mail ;o) (it doesn't seem to work for
my it-mate.co.uk mail, only my aol.com mail, which is no good as I refuse to
use AOL's e-mail service)

When I'm on my AOL dial up, I use ADR which is excellent. It is
buyware, wholly efficient, and simple.
AFAIK it is the only app of its kind.

Have you tried http://www.hotpop.com ?

Their free accounts include SMTP server use. Also free forwarding to
another email address of your choice.

I can concur with this. I have been trying for a very long time to find
something similar with no success. I am *that* close to actually buying the
damn thing.

Out of curiosity, what don't you trust? Them selling your personal info or
the security of your private e-mail? Both?

Set up your own free SMTP server on your local machine:

http://www.softstack.com/freesmtp.html

(Note: You said "not located on the same PC" -- does this mean my
advice above doesn't count? I've been using Free SMTP Server for
months now with no problems at all.

The one I currently have *is* on my local machine, thats the problem. The
AOL software is preventing it from working properly. Hence my need to get an
external one.

Whats annoying me the most is, before going back to AOHell dial-up, it
worked perfectly.

This group is supposed to be for the discussion of *freeware*, not
*shareware*. That's why it's named alt.comp.freeware. Why are you
recommending shareware in this group? Please try to stay on topic.

Nice to know that in the midst of all the current crap that this group
is having to try to get out of, that there is some petty minded
bastard monitoring all posts for signs of divergence from the one true
path.
