Gravity???
Exellent choice (or option) for a newsreader, IMHO. Has the advantage of
looking (initially) much like OE so a user who is familiar with only OE
can get started using it pretty much right away and then explore its much
more powerful features as he/she goes along. I use it for all the text
based groups I read.

It might not be technically "freeware". Maybe it is "abandonedware"? It
used to belong to MicroPlanet who stopped development of it and gave away
the code. There has been some further development of some features of it
(mostly related to using it for binary downloading) by some other
individuals but for the most part, the program as it was when MicroPlanet
abandoned it was already a fine program. YMMV.

I've tried most newsreaders and go back to OE every time. Tried Xnews again
this week. It lasted one evening. Maybe I'm just used to the OE interface
having used it for so long but it just seems so straight forward to use
compared to the others.
Have you tried 40tude Dialog?

the thing I like *most* about Xnews is it _doesn't_ look like OE, but
normally has only 2 panes, headings and messages; the third pane, groups,
is a separate window accessed by going to the server(s), so you don't
lose all the space.

And if you don't know which group you're reading at any moment you're
even dimmer than me.

I agree Xnews is complicated, but I don't use any of that, I don't score,
just very occasionally killfile - one keypress, and if I join in a thread
it scores it for me and flashes and bongs and goes to any answers.

The nice "mark all read" (shift F8), and go to next group (F8) are about
the only keypresses I know - the nice CTRL-Enter when going to a new
group to see only the last umpteen headers; selecting a bit of a post
before opening up an answer automatically quotes it, the multicoloured
levels of quotes, etc...

I'm not criticising any except OE, I used that a lot (of course) when I
first found usenet -wha t a discovery - and I've tried others too, but I
like Xnews the best, and if I were smarter I'd like it even more.

God, I'm banging on the way I do about me SV650, I'll go and have a lie
down.

Funny that you should say that because I always have only those 2 panes.
Groups then is available with one click as a drop down menu.
Having groups as a permanent third pane at the left side is an option.

Guess I didn't know that when I had OE, (btw I still use it for email,
because the others I've tried are not enough better to make it worth the
bother too change) but it wasn't too long before someone advised free
agent, and I've tried quite a lot since then, but it's Xnews that shivers
my timbers
