Not sure if google will post but here goes:

http://www.rtdos.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=29

temporary home only; once http://www.villiagecouncil.net is up it will
be hosted there; created out of a recomendation in acf newsgroup; not
associated with acf in any way shape or form (at least not yet); i'm
looking for a way to use phpbb to post messages to acf thru this new
website (once it is up); basically i created this forum to keep tabs
on what versions of what programs work with what versions of Windows
(or dos or mac or linux). if this works out i'll try and work on
creating a spreadsheet table and compile what's posted. (i'm open to
suggestions for creating a better description as well)

well, what do you guys think ? would it be worth it (i.e. have the
support of the acf newsgroup) or am i just wasting my / your time ?

One solution I am about to try is installing, say win 98 second edition, on the
same machine as 2000. There are utilities that do basic file operations on NTFS
partitions from FAT32 ones, and NTFS can read FAT32 files, indemically. I will
then do most of my work booting to the win 9x partition with tools I have
learned to trust and like. I will switch only occasionally to the NT based 2000
for something I can not do in a 9x version.

Indeed, I retained a lot of my favorite dos tools this way and could configure
setup files to run virtually all my useful dos software from win 9x (with the
proper autoexec.bat and config.sys files, etc.) Example: I used the quick
directory change dos tool, ACD to instantly bring up a window in any directory,
when I know a few letters of that directory's name.

Of course this is a delaying game, since Mr. Gates will incessently keep trying
to outdate and make non-backward-compatible every Os, browser, script language
-- whatever he can. But it can delay the pain for many many years (so far for
me).

I finally did something like that the other day on ONE of my machines: Quad
boot 98SE, NT4, 2K, and XP Home. Only reason I kept NT4 on there was a
single $$$ (actually only free to Avaya Partner Members) that ONLY works on
NT4. But I still mainly work out of XP Home.

or will LongHorn (next ver of Windows) be the death of freeware?

Who cares?

Move to *nix, or test and identify another OS to find one that you like
and get on with it. ;-)

M$ is hardly the only game around, anymore and I doubt that Bilious Bill
is using his strongarm techniques to force you to use his *product* (apart
from still intimidating sellers into installing it initially).

Many of those freeware apps will neatly run under other OS emulators.

Good luck.
