Ok, so my dad says to me.... "Honey, since you love computers so much why
don't you go into programing?"

My answer is: Every computer program that has ever need to be written - HAS
BEEN WRITTEN. Aside making minor variations, there is nothing new under the
sun.

Let's face it there is a computer program for EVERYTHING from Funeral
Directors to Smoothie Stands. There are programs for EMTs, Day care
centers, bars, strip clubs - probably even PROSTITUTE SOFTWARE!!!!

And what there isn't already software for (if anything) could probably be
handled by a good database management program like Access. (Yeah, I know,
some of you wouldn't use the word good and a Microsoft Product in the same
sentance).

So guys, what do you think? Has it ALL been done?

There's a blind woman whose main interest is Irish folksongs. She needs a
speech reader which can handle English and Gaelic ON THE SAME PAGE.

Not one word processor or text editor available works the same way I do.
PC-Write did, up through 2.55.

Yes. And no.

There will always be a call for ingenuity and creativeness in any
endeavor. There will never be another Beatles (for example) but someone
else will come along with their own thing and be as big.

The trick I would think is trying to find an underserved niche and excel
in that. And if it's something you have an interest in even better.

I bet you could be the next Bill Gates if you wanted (except nicer). :)

So guys, what do you think? Has it ALL been done?

In any creative endeavour, we are limited only by our imaginations. As
such, in every creative field, it will NEVER have ALL been done. But only
you can have any idea as to where the limits of your own imagination lie.
If you ever truly decide that "it's all been done" then, by you, it has.

Regards,
Ian.

Cousin Shashay ....

You might spend some time checking the archived requests
from the Made-to-Order freeware site ....

http://www.csn.ul.ie/~madman/software/madereq/archived.htm

Requests from this site alone
could provide work for a L A R G E army
of programmers busy for several lifetimes each ....

I think we've barely scratched the surface ....

Probably not - but it ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it.

Think about Windows, for example. Even back in the DOS days, much of
what you can do on a compy now could be done then. The trick with
Windows was to make it simpler...or at least visually more obvious.

There's an old saying - if you can make a better mousetrap, the world
will beat a path to your door - so perhaps the future isn't so much
about new ideas, but about making what we have better.

I think there's a need ( and a niche ) for modular software that works
at the user level. In effect, a collection of applets that can be
plugged into each other, with a corresponding applet that allows the
user to manipulate what gets passed from one applet to the other.
Granted, this already exists at the programming level - but that
doesn't make it very accessible to the user, and it rarely allows the
user to tailor the program exactly to his or her needs.
It also exists in a very basic way in the form of program plug-ins,
it's just that the scope needs to be extended out and beyond
functionality within an individual program.

Even better if these modules are freeware, of course!

It's an interesting time for computing - it looks as though the gap
between software needs and hardware performance has closed; the need
for speed seems largely confined to gamers, servers and high-end
industrial applications - we have the power, all we need is something
to do with it.

No.

I've been programming professionally (as in being paid to do it) for
over 20 years now (i.e. I predate the IBM peecee (and I _never_ used
BASIC)) and it has most certainly _not_ all been done.

Every now and then I see an application go past that does something in a
new way and think "damn, why didn't _I_ think of that!"

And, with all this data being stuffed into databases all around the
world, tools than can make sense of it are going to be needed. Yes,
they are working on them, look up "Data Mining," but there is still a
hell of a lot of the _idea_ phase to be done, and even then, it's AI
stuff, and that is about as open-ended as you can get.

Cheers,
Gary B-)

Ask the guys that developed ICQ. AOL bought their cheesy software for over
$300 million. AOL bought WinAmp for mega bucks and made Justin rich. A
recent purchase was an anti-spam software bought out by McAfee. Forget the
name, but I'm sure he is pretty comfortable. Performance test was licensed
by Symantec, and I suppose the guy can retire if he wishes. How about the
Aqua (Fish) screen saver that MS licensed? I smell money!!!

Find some crappy software and make it better, and market it vigorously. Make
it the de facto software in its genre. Someone will buy it just like the
above.

Therein lies the wisdom of the question and your answer: there are TWO
forces at work here, the creator and the marketer. Neither will succeed
without the other.

I'm confused, are you trying to promote ingenuity and creativeness
or bury it.? There are more then enough mixed messages to deal with
as it is. What exactly is a 'nice' Billy Gates?

Remember that his major at Harvard was poker. You can study poker, but I
believe it is the kind of game where you need a certain native temperament
to be skilled. Much of MSFT history can be viewed as a series of poker games,
in which BG walked off with everyone's chips.

One who sends you a nice bouquet of flowers after he f's you?

Correct. You need to be obsessive, imaginative and lucky to succeed.

A person who can succeed wildly by being creative and inventive (rather
than predatory). Is it THAT hard to figure?

One who sends you a nice bouquet of flowers after he f's you?

[shudder] -> This begs a simple question. How is it you would know
this?. Even though you make it out to be a joke (I assume), why the
bloody hell would you! Got flowers?

Wait, I think I see now. XP came with flowers. Nothing like the
sweet smell of success right?

I suppose a 'nice' Billy Gates would be one that provides
billions of dollars of humanitarian aid through a charitable
foundation-

yep , everytime I crack a coke a bunch of nubiles
offer me a lift in a sports car

Spin 1.001

3% + spin cycle = 100%

$500k per year over oh 10 years thats a $5M grant
but wait, there's more, split it between 3 and you get triple
kudos and tax benefits, and next year you get to announce
the same $5 M all over again.

e.g. this $4.5M builds on a grant of $5M last year

if there isn't a balance sheet signed by an auditor it means nothing
( and even the auditing is now in doubt)

Yeah, why bother doing anything charitable if you're rich?
Angry and bitter people automatically assume that if you're
rich you can't possibly be interested in anything other than
making money.

You won't become a filthy rich fat cat unless that singular driving
force to make money isn't firmly planted at the top of your list of
things to do.

The mega rich and their almost always flamboyant acts of charity is
nothing new. A tried and true tactic. It's a great PR maneuver and
cost effective to boot. Did you notice that word "spin" up there?

So are there some rich folks that do charitable deeds for the simple
sake of goodness? No doubt, but they account for a tiny minority.
No, a microscopic minority. I'd suspect these would be the ones that
don't create complete websites either.
