Operating System not working

I originally have an emachine computer. I had to replace the motherboard and processor. Because my computer didn't come with an operating system cd, but it did come with a windows xp home edition key, I ended up buying windows xp home edition upgrade cd from ebay. About a few weeks ago I got the new motherboard and processor. I put both of them in and then when I went to go put in the installation disks, the computer turned on but the monitor would not. If anyone knows why this might have occured or what the problem is, please let me know. Thank you.

Hi unavailable,

This sounds like a hardware problem, not an operating system problem. Do you see anything on the screen when you start the PC?

Also, so you hear the rest of the PC start correctly (Hard drive spinning up, hear a beep etc.?)

Could you post your full system specification please.

One more thing: A Windows XP Home Upgrade CD will only work when you have a previous version of Windows (98,ME,2000 etc.) installed.

But you still should see writing on the screen.

Yes - you should see the technical writing of the BIOS, which then tries to start the operating system. Usually, if there is no operating system, you'd get a message (after a few moments) saying 'NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND, INSERT SYSTEM DISK" or something similar.

Try unplugging everything you connected to the motherboard and re-connecting it. Especially check that the graphics card is sitting square in its socket.

Did you wear an antistatic wrist strap (to prevent damaging your PC components by static electricity) while working inside your PC?

Do you get any beeps when the PC starts? They can be used to work out what is wrong.

"Also, so you hear the rest of the PC start correctly (Hard drive spinning up, hear a beep etc.?)"

When it starts up, I do not hear the hard drive beep, only the floppy drive boots I think.

I am just wondering if it is not working because originally when I put in my motherboard, I didn't ground the motherboard to the case, I just put it on the back wall without the standoffs. And I heard by doing that, it can blow the whole system, I don't know how true that is or not. Do you think that is possible?

Omg What???

OMG WHAT???

The standoffs are used for a purpose mate! That purpose being to stop and legs or solder underneath the board touching the chassis. Please, please tell us you didnt really do that and your winding us up!!!?!?!?!?!

LOL gotta be a wind up surely??????

there is nothing wrong with running a pc board out of the case. it will harm nothing. The mounts serve no grounding purpose as there is no direct connection to the case from the power supply.
Most of the time, those standoffs cause more troubles than they are worth. many newer cases use plastic insulating ones for that purpose, and will only have 1 connection that is not, and that is soley to keep rfi noise down.
be sure that you have a sufficient wattage power supply.
try powerup with only the video card plugged in, no disks plugged into the mobo or psu. be sure that the video card has the external power connector plugged to the power supply if there is one on your card.
be sure it is seated squarely in the socket.
be sure the monitor is on!(and plugged in) :)

I think you need to read his last statement!!

ooops, misread that. you need to put it on some type of insulation of you are going to lay it in the case for test purposes.(like some cardboard).
if you laid it right on the mounting tray, you likely did fry the board, and possibly the power supply. smell anything funny when you powered it on? or hear any pops?

Well, this just proves WHY you shouldn't go delving inside your broken PC unless you have the knowledge or are following the guidelines of someone experienced (like most people on this forum!)

Bit too late for that now, that board has gotta be fried, likely the CPU, RAM, maybe even the PSU but they usually TELL you if they have blown. ;) (they go POP)

Is unavailable still here?

We can help you diagnose whether the PSU is fried or not, some part of it must be still working if you heard fans, etc (you said 'The PC starts' I assume that means you heard fans) - hopefully something is salvageable.

I know, I was stupid to forget, but no, it doesn't smell funny, and the fans still turn on. The fan on the motherboard still generates to the cpu so I don't think the motherboard is fried, is it? well, any ideas how to find out for sure?

It won;t be easy to figure out what is fried and waht is not without some spare stuff laying around.
I would first suggest you get the board out of the case, then lay it down on some insulating type material, ie wood, cardboard, then install the vid card, and position the case so that you can still connect the power leads and such.
connect the monitor, keyboard, mouse and power on.
look for the leds flashing on the keyboard, the monitor coming out of power save state. if none of that happens, the ps could be fried, it may be supplying some, but not all the voltages required.
the mobo could be fried too. if so, there is no way to tell what is bad on it, the memory could be blown, the cpu, it depends on how it shorted and how it reacted.
you will need to start with a new board, and test your components, or better still maybe just bite the bullet and take ti to a shop for them to figure what is blown. may be cheaper in the long run.

I have the knowledge, its just that I forget to put it in as I have said in a previous post. That insult was 100% uncalled for. This just proves WHY you don't go assuming and it also proves WHY you should read full posts, not just parts of them. Anyways, nothing is fried, I am so relieved. I took everything out, disconnected everything, and put everything back and it worked. Thanks for trying to help guys I really appreciate it. Now that everything is working, it takes me back to the original topic. This is a topic that I don't have much knowledge about. When I put in the windows xp upgrade cd to reformat everything, the screen shows up now but it doesn't boot. It just stays at the screen.

that is a little unclear. is the cd boot screen all that comes up?
or did you do the format and install and it is hanging on the boot from hdd?
are you sure you have the proper boot order and are not trying to boot from the old install?

This is the last post you made before I made my post. It doesn't say anything about forgetting to put the standoffs in, or why you even took them out in the first place!

It wasn't an insult.

And that 'previous post' was made AFTER I made my post.

Why not try reading the thread from beginning to end, before accusing me of 'not reading the full post.'

I try to help someone, and this is what I get?

This is just stupid.

If you want or need any insults, then see me ... I have a few I can throw at you.

Reading any of your posts is very hard on the eyes ... try breaking them down into sentences AND use a paragraph or two.

People trying to help may then be able to read what your saying. :)

Did I do something wrong? Its just that it seemed like I was insulted so I thought I'd bring it up. Well I guess I made a mistake then. No one was hurt in the process, right?

Sorry I'm not too good with proper english, lol. Now I have this other problem. I just ordered an actual windows xp home edition cd and when I put it in, it comes to the screen where it asks how you want to start windows, safe mode, last good configuration, or start windows normally. I forget the rest but I hope you guys know what I'm referring to. Is there a reason why this may be happening? Hope this English is better than my previous posts :-P
