Very clever. :) Thank you both. I think that would be a good way for
families and/or friends to share photos - better than emailing them
directly - better than YouSendIt as the files are available
indefinitely.

"Google will terminate your account in accordance with Section 9 of the
Terms of Use if you fail to login to your account for a period of nine
months."

It doesn't say if checking mail via pop3 counts as logging in.
You won't see the ads if you use pop3, so I guess it doesn't count.

This may also apply when sharing an account with others:

http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/terms_of_use.html
"The Service is made available to you for your personal use only."

I don't want to spoil the party here, just warn people who think they can
trust google to have your data still available after you have been on a 1
year vacation, or if you share your account with others, or do not log in
through the web interface now and then to keep the account alive.

These rules may also change, as the current mail service is an experiment.

IMO this is still "personal use". IOW not "business use". One email
address for everybody in the family used to be SOP with most ISPS. This
is just a "slight" extension of that standard practice. ;)

I shouldn't have said "indefinitely" - just meant for much longer than
the seven days or so that YouSendIt keeps a file available.

Anyway. . . I finally broke down <g> and got a Gmail account yesterday
so I could try this idea out.

If they log IP-numbers they may see that the same account is accessed by
several people. In a situation when they want to reduce the number of
accounts this can be used to justify closing down a number of accounts.

You have probably heard the talk about an account for life and such which
googlemail has spread.
Anyway. . . I finally broke down <g> and got a Gmail account
yesterday so I could try this idea out.

I reported my interest 1'st of April a year ago, and a few weeks ago I
got an invitation from the Google staff, so have also been checking this
out now. That's why I knew these details.

In the general talk about these accounts one gets the impression that it
is for life. Only by reading the info texts carefully can one realize the
limitations.

Well Google's Gmail gives you a one Gig mailbox.

I haven't used this but...
http://www.peer2mail.com/

"Peer2Mail is the first software that lets you store and share files
on any web-mail account. If you have a web mail account with large
storage space, you can use P2M to store files on it. Web-mail
providers such as Gmail (Google Mail), Walla!, Yahoo and more, provide
storage space that ranges from 100MB to 3GB.
P2M splits the file you want to share/store zips and encrypts it. P2M
then sends the file segments one by one to your account. Once P2M
uploaded all file segments, you can download them and use P2M to merge
the segments back to the original file."

"Peer2Mail does not contain 3rd party software and is 100% free!"
