ok fine so you remember where things are.

Without searching can you tell me the location of a particular system file?

I really need to find MSOOBE.exe

Now without looking it up online, or without using the search built into
windows please tell me the full command line address to locate this file.

Remember, no searching allowed ;)

Not what I said. I said I remember where files are that I created. I, of
course, cannot remember the thousands of files that Windows created,
although your flippancy and lack of seriousness is fully noted.

Of course not.

Please re-read my post.

XP's search would find that file in a New York second.

Now, can you give one GOOD reason to upgrade to Vista and one GOOD and
USEFUL thing that Vista can do that XP can't besides make you dig very
deep into your pockets to assure that Bill Gates remains the richest man
in the world with the hardware and software vendors close behind?

1) Why no searching? What are you trying to accomplish?

2) Open DOS window. Type "C:" (Enter). Type "DIR /S MSOOBE.exe >
MSOOBE.txt". Open MSOOBE.txt in your favorite text editor. Select "Find >
MSOOBE".

Isn't this thread about XP vs Vista? XP search finds it just fine.

Oh, I get it now. He was saying that 1 + 2 = 4.
"I don't need a fancy search because I know where I put things and remember
where I put them."
means Vista has a worthwhile search feature?

Exactly, what I said. XP Search finds it just fine. I'd guess Vista
enhanced search is worthless to most of us.
DOS search can find any file just fine too. It just may take a little
longer or a couple extra steps to see it if you have a lot of files, which
every computer does these days.

No my point was that Search has a reason for existing.

For instance my wife is an artist and photographer and has several 10's of
thousands of pictures.

Yes she does keep them sorted properly into descriptively named folders and
subfolders and even has the pictures well named.

But by using the search feature and adding tagging info to the pics as they
adds them to the system she can save time by using the inbuilt search.

Rather than navigating for quite some time she can just type it in and poof
it pulls it up from the index in a second right from that start menu without
her even having to go anywhere else.

It's a real timesaver when you have enough files.

So don't pretend it has no value just because you only have a small amount
of files ;)

Sounds quicker and more thorough but not quick enough nor thorough
enough to justify the cost, the built-in DRM or the invasive and
insulting anti piracy programs that come bundled with Vista. I am
waiting to see if MS sees the writing on the wall but I'm afraid they'll
only get it when their market share is the same as Enron's is now. In
the meantime, I'm holding out with XP for my workstation and looking
into alternatives to Windows for the future.
