Not Responding errors

For some time now my computer seems to hang frequently thus displaying the
"Not Responding" error on the top blue bar. At first I thought it was
limited to my Internet Explorer, so I upgraded to IE 7 but it's still happens
and even more frequently. First the program hangs, then I left click on the
mouse and it displalys the "Not Responding" message, then I wait for it to
finally resond. It also happens with Office programs or basically any other
program installed.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2.

I have defraged my hard drive, run all SpyWare scans, cleaned up my cookies,
temporary internet files, system tray, my Anti-Virus is up-to-date, I have
installed all Microsoft updates, etc.

Anybody have any suggestions as this is becoming quite annoying.
 
Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on
your C drive in Windows and select Properties to get this information.

How much RAM memory?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of

Event Viewer.

I hope I did this right so you can understand. Any further advice is

Your main problem is fairly obvious. Insufficient RAM memory. You need
to add at least 256 mb but the system would probably benefit from adding
512 mb. You need to consult your motherboard manual to see what type and
amount of memory can be installed.

What is your CPU speed?

What is your computer make and model? What is the make and model of your
motherboard?

Category: Scheduler Events Event ID: 101
This indicates that the Windows Updates for August were not installed.
The problem could well have arisen because your system had not long been
started and was busy running anti-virus scans etc. You should check to
see if the Updates have since installed.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History .You should see a number of
successful updates on or after 19 August 2007 if they have been
installed. If there are any red Failed Icons click on each icon and post
details of the Error code.

If no updates are there. Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your
Windows up- to-date with Windows Update, Custom and then follow on
screen instructions.
Only try this after Windows XP has been running for 30 minutes and any
anti-virus scan has completed.

What anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes do you have installed. If
you have the anti-virus programme I think you have your system may
benefit from having a less demanding programme.

It is difficult to be sure whether the other error are being caused by a
stressed system have insufficient RAM memory or for some other reason.

While I have your attention, a program called ccApp always hangs when I'm
shutting down the computer and I have to End Task on it. Also, something
called FontCapture does the same thing. Today explorer.exe also hung and I
had to "End" it.

Upon restart, it takes a good 3-4 minutes for my icons to appear and then
another minute or so before I can click on anything.

I thought maybe these issues were all related to my overall problem so I'm
mentioning them.

Adding to Gerry advice which I disagree with, the applications/programs you
have if maintain correctly can happily perform under 256 MB of RAM you have,
but you looks having a trouble somewhere on your system.

I commented some not all of the error messages , but please check the Time
and Date on your system set up correctly as this can screw up the updates for
windows and other software on your System.

first try this to perform the rest of steps:
Run disk clean up and Defrag in safe mode, if your system configured to
remember password you can be selective in your clean up method.

Symantec LiveUpdate, if you run the update engine for Norton which the
Process ccApp.exe is a Symantec process, that indicate symantec didn't
release the Memory on shut down causing this error to be thrown on the log.
As I said if you run the update for Norton you will get the error message
updates failed with this error "LUALL.EXE" 80078 or similar, then there is a
link click on this and you will be taken to symantec to download a plug-in
for the Update engine which check for updates and sysnc with the symantec
server in real time, download the tool, there is a step-by-step guide on how
to perform this.

Then open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you may need your XP CD installation media for this
procedure to be accomplished

Or repair/install of XP, note if you have IE7 you need to uninstall to
perform the repair.

Notwithstanding the comments by Nass I still think your key problem is
insufficient RAM memory. True there are other problems but these would
diminish with more RAM and the nature of these other problems would
become clearer. You should be aware that Nass and I frequently compare
notes as we tend to respond to the same problems.

The need for more RAM can be verified by running a freeware utility
which gives better information on pagefile usage than Task Manager.
Using this tool will have a negligible impact on your system.

Use page file monitor to observe what is the peak usage. Start it to run
immediately after start-up and look at the log. Pagefilemon takes
snapshots. You need to run it at the beginning of the session at then
run it again at intervals throughout the sessions. The log is Pagefile
log.txt. If you right click on the file in Windows Explorer and select

Note programs using undo features, particularly those associated with
graphics and photo editing, require large amounts of memory so if you
use this type of programme check these first observing how the page
usage increases when they start and whether the usage decreases when you
close the programme.

You do have the anti-virus programme I thought you might have. Norton
does bring with it a large footprint and this will have a noticeable
impact on system performance. There are other freeware programmes which
do the business without the performance downside. Norton still enjoys a
good reputation with business users but is not rated highly nowadays for
use on home computers.

FontCapture (or should it be Font Capture) leads me to another question.
Do you use Adobe Acrobat Reader ? If yes, which specific version? Are
you just using it to read and print pdf documents or are you editing pdf
documents? There have problems reported with some versions of Adobe and
it has a large footprint much like Norton.

Thanks Gerry and Nass for the advice.

I have ACDSee 4.0 installed and it has been since shortly after I bought the
computer 4 years ago.

I have the full version of Adobe installed (again since day one); however I
only use it to read and print documents.

I have several graphic/photo editing programs intalled and use them fairly
frequently. I have PaintShop Pro, Print Shop, Photo Editor, Adobe PhotoShop
and possible a few others. All of these have been installed since day one as
well. I do have a large number of photo's on my pc and I regularly save them
to CD and remove them.

As for Norton, when my subscription was up for renewal a couple of months
ago I somehow ended up upgraded to their latest version for free instead of
just renewing the one I had. Quite frankly I preferred the older version,
plus it took my Norton Utilities away with it. I do think my "Not
Responding" problems have gotten worse since then. Coincidence? I don't
know.

Other than the Norton upgrade and the IE 7 upgrade, I haven't installed
anything new to the computer. I even removed all my mp3 files to clear up
3GB of room thinking that might help. Why all of a sudden is my RAM an issue
do you think?

While I have your attention, a program called ccApp always hangs
when I'm shutting down the computer and I have to End Task on it.
Also, something called FontCapture does the same thing. Today
explorer.exe also hung and I had to "End" it.

Upon restart, it takes a good 3-4 minutes for my icons to appear and
then another minute or so before I can click on anything.

I thought maybe these issues were all related to my overall problem
so I'm mentioning them.

Adding to Gerry advice which I disagree with, the
applications/programs you have if maintain correctly can happily
perform under 256 MB of RAM you have, but you looks having a trouble
somewhere on your system.

I commented some not all of the error messages , but please check the
Time and Date on your system set up correctly as this can screw up
the updates for windows and other software on your System.

first try this to perform the rest of steps:
Run disk clean up and Defrag in safe mode, if your system configured
to remember password you can be selective in your clean up method.

Symantec LiveUpdate, if you run the update engine for Norton which the
Process ccApp.exe is a Symantec process, that indicate symantec didn't
release the Memory on shut down causing this error to be thrown on
the log. As I said if you run the update for Norton you will get the
error message updates failed with this error "LUALL.EXE" 80078 or
similar, then there is a link click on this and you will be taken to
symantec to download a plug-in for the Update engine which check for
updates and sysnc with the symantec server in real time, download the
tool, there is a step-by-step guide on how to perform this.

Then open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you may need your XP CD installation media
for this procedure to be accomplished

Or repair/install of XP, note if you have IE7 you need to uninstall to
perform the repair.

Call me naive, but these programs (the upgraded Norton withstanding) have all
been installed for years without issue sowhat would cause them to suddenly be
a problem. Also, are they draining my memory even though when the "Not
Responding" error occurs, they're not even running?
 
You need to run page file monitor to confirm exactly how much of the
pagefile is actually being used.

Norton will cause a particular problem at start because most likely
iniates a full scan. This alone can make a computer unusable until the
scan has completed. If you succeed in starting another programme before
the scan has completed there is every chance that you will get a Not
Responding message for the programme you have started. How long does it
take for Norton to complete the scan on start up? How many files is
Norton scanning?

Although you say these programmes have been installed for years I doubt
they are the same as when they were first installed. Adobe has definely
grown significantly in size over the years.Which of the programmes I
listed load on start up. Do they need to load on start up or could you
change any to load on demand.

If a programme is Not Responding it is still running. Just end it in
Task Manager and notice how the response from the computer improves.
When a Not Responding message is generated it is indicative that the
programme has hit a problem. It can then keep trying to resolve the
problem but in doing so only exacerbates the problem. It can be better
to stop the programme and try again at a more favourable time.

Is there a direct correlation between the start up process and the Not
Responding messages? If the computer has been running some time are the
Not Responding messages less frequent, the same or more frequent?

What are the precise versions of Adobe you have?

I don't have any programs in my Startup. Learned that lesson a long time
ago but it still takes 4 minutes for my icons to appear and to be able to
proceed. I'm wondering what is stalling it. You think it's Norton? Even
though it's not in my Startup? Is there somewhere else I can look to stop it
from scanning on startup if that is indeed what's happening?


Usually when I get the "Not Responding" error, I just have to left click my
mouse, wait a couple of seconds and it clears up. Just a little while ago
however and once earlier today it hung for several minutes and I was unable
to even get to my Task Manager.

1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.

Msconfig is a Diagnostic Utility and not intended to be used to turn off
unwanted start up programmes. You do this from within each programme or
using a programme like Autoruns. Leave msconfig alone and try Autoruns:

Look in Norton for ways to suspend scanning on Start Up to test it's

uninstall wont work norton makes a backup of everything
so go ask norton how to do it

No, there does not seem to be any correlation to the startup process and the
Not responding error. It can happen at any time.

You both gave me a lot of suggestions to try and I've been busy so I haven't
had a chance to test any of them out just yet. Will post when I do.
