Has anyone tried this. Buying a new DELL PC now but asking for Windows XP to
be installed instead of Vista as standard. Would they do it do you reckon?

- I am just looking at the angle for people who have got hardware and
software which is working fine with XP but that would have trouble with
Vista or just purely for people wanting Vista to be out for some time to
iron out teething troubles before them using Vista themselves.

I suppose, the answer is buy a new system today and you have Windows Vista
as standard whether you want it or not?

Andy.

Why would anyone want Windows XP (a 6-year old O/S)
installed on a new, modern computer? If you are going
to spend the money for a new computer, you should have
the very best operating system installed, which is Vista.

The way it works for mot big-name vendors is this: The
professional/corporate line of hardware will continue to be available with
XP for some time. This is due to corporation's wanting to maintain
"baselined" machines throughout their organization (all the same - match
existing workstations).

However, the consumer lines typically will have no such legacy OS offered.
They are designed for consumers that want bleeding edge and are not worried
about "baselines".

If you check the Dell site, for example, you will see that only their
consumer line of laptops (Inspiron) and Desktops (Dimension) do not have an
XP choice. Their corporate line (Laptop=Latitude, Desktop=Optiplex) all
offer XP even now.

It is similar with other manufacturers.

It depends on the OEM and whether you buy from the home user shop or the
business shop. I just bought 4 Optiplexes for a client from Dell with XP
Pro. My Dell contact tells me that all consumer-level (Home/Home Office)
machines will only come with Vista now. He didn't know how long XP would
continue to be offered on the business side.

What is wrong with Windows XP with service pack 2 and all the updates loaded
bang up to date?

Because that's what he wants, Carey. Don't question him, give him the
answer or don't reply.

There are many reasons, none of which are really any of your business.

LOL! The jury's still out on that, Carey.

I don't know about the USA, but in Spain, you can buy a new computer
with no OS (They get it on eMule; Vista and Office 2007 are already
available or so I hear.), XP, Vista or Linux. I assume it's the same in
the USA except you have to look where here it's par for the course.
Unless, of course, you contact Dell, Packard Bell or Compaq/HP Spain ;-)

And will be for quite some time I reckon!

It's not as secure as Windows Vista. It doesn't run as well as Windows
Vista, and so on.

There's only one thing I can think of where XP can say it beats Vista, and
that is the photo import tool.

my short experience so far with Vista is that its too much 'overkill' on the
security side. OTT & slow. How can Vista run as good as xp when there aren't
too many compatible drivers and software yet? and with all these problems
listed in this NG with vista? - are you sure you can wholeheartedly say XP
doesn't run as well as Vista at present?

The photo import tool? I never knew it was there. What does it do exactly
that Vista doesn/t?

Have you looked at the top of the line machines? They still come with XP
Media Center, and I wonder why. I am waiting to order a new DELL, but I
don't want XP with the Vista upgrade option, as I fear it will be many many
months before I get the Vista DVD.

That is a very very short sighted reply.

We use XP exclusively at work. We're not large enough to warrant
purchasing through volume licensing with software assurance (so no
rights to downgrade the OS). Some tools we use will never work on
Vista. We're now having to consider the issue that when we buy our next
PC we'll be getting (and paying for) Vista, even though we don't want it.

Not if you buy through one of Dell's business divisions (including small
business). Dell allows you to specify XP at no extra charge. You have
to order by phone, though.

The nvidia drivers are not out yet, that is why it still doesn't come

No, it's more than just that. It's because a lot of specialized software
used by a lot of businesses is not Vista-ready. It's because businesses
with smart IT people won't move to a new operating system without a lot
of testing first. Even if a business's niche/bespoke software does work
with Vista, smart IT people will wait at least 6 months-1 year or even
until after the first Service Pack to change. The same thing happened
with the move from NT to Win2k to XP. This is nothing new.

Absolutely nothing. Please, ignore the Microsoft sycophantic shills.
