| you missed out a few things regarding pc-cillin..
|
| bad points; anti-spam is poor, spyware option is extremely limited,
| doesnt scan IM downloads and needs setting up correctly on install as
| the default settings are pretty piss poor!
|
| Good points; updated daily, AV is brilliant, firewall is also damn
| good, has wi-fi detection and loves networks plus its a lot more
| robust than NIS 2005

Bad point; Trend Micro is very slow to add a signature to the CPR for
a submitted sample. From my 2004 tests, it took as long as 6 weeks for
the avg. consumer user.

even so, IMO it's still quite possibly the best av/fw package on the
market at the moment..

The above points prove why packages are not really the best solution.
Top of mind, best in class, stand alone utilities preclude one from
settling for "ok packages" or having to take the good with the bad. It's
like planning a vacation; is it really worth going if all you care about
is how much you can get for your money?

Would you venture an opinion on the Kaspersky product?

Isn't there a way to tell PC-Cillin to work in the background, without
grabbing focus whenever it finds something?

I know Norton has such an option. I was thinking of switching from
Norton to Pc-Cillin, but not if Pc-Cillin grabs focus every time it
deletes something from an email, or whatever.
Jack.
I got a response from TrendMicro tech support stating that PC-Cillin doesn't
have a "quiet" mode, where it simply protects the computer and logs its
actions. From what I hear, PC-Cillin "alerts" users to each "problem" it
finds by grabbing focus, and demanding a response.

"The reason why pc-cillin doesn't have this feature is because it wants to
alert the user to take care of the virus before it spreads out or to prevent
outbreaks from happening."

I trusted Norton AV to "take care of the virus before it spreads ...", but I
guess I cannot trust PC-Cillin to take care of the virus?

Jack.

When I didn't get a response from my original Email for a day, I thought I'd
try again. This time, I got the following response - quite different than
the earlier response! One Tech says NO, the other says YES. But now I think
I'll replace Norton AV with PC-Cillin 2005.

"Regarding your concern, yes we have those settings that PC-CILLIN can run
on a QUITE mode. You've been miss informed.
You can post this reply and inform all in the forums that PC-CILLIN can
perform MUCH BETTER than the NORTON AV.

HOW TO CHANGE THE SETTING
============================

CHANGE THE SCAN SETTINGS TO DELETE.
To do that, please follow the steps below:
Open the Trend Micro Internet Security by clicking on:
START >> PROGRAMS >> Trend Micro Internet Security >> Trend Micro Internet
Security (For Windows 98 / ME / 2000)
START >> ALL PROGRAMS >> Trend Micro Internet Security >> Trend Micro
Internet Security (For Windows XP)
Once it is open, click on the SYSTEM tab on the right part of the Trend
Micro Internet Security Window.
Now click on SCAN SETTINGS. On the SCAN ACTION, choose SPECIFIC ACTION, and
then on ACTION WHEN VIRUS FOUND, change Clean to "DELETE". Then click on the
APPLY button.
On that same window, click on REAL-TIME SCAN. On the SCAN ACTION, choose
SPECIFIC ACTION, and then on ACTION WHEN VIRUS FOUND, change Clean to
"DELETE". Then click on the APPLY button.
After doing all the steps above, you need to RESCAN your computer to make
sure that your computer doesn't have anymore viruses. Then, you should be
all set.
Thank you for your continued support."

I disagree. having a package like pc-cillin, nav etc means that the AV
& FW work together as a team.
Top of mind, best in class, stand alone utilities preclude one from
settling for "ok packages" or having to take the good with the bad

theres no stand alone AV or FW software that doesnt had good and bad
points. at least with a total package theres only one support number to
call if it goes tits up..

not tried it yet, but am looking forward to trying it as soon as I can get
my hands on a full copy for a few days. howevever it does seem rather
expensive for an av/fw package and IMO it needs to be pretty special to
warrant the asking price.

i've got news for you - although they're packaged together, they operate
independently... their functions do not overlap...

and if it does go 'tits up' *both* forms of protection may stop
working... somehow i don't see how a single point of failure is good for
anyone...
