Norton overrated?.

Yes...the program I have is DOS based, version 3.14e. - 5.56 MB. Looks like
it is too big for a floppy but, perhaps a Zip disc would work. F-Prot
doesn't update but maybe once a month, like most other AV's. I run an
update on the 5th of each month. Most updates are posted around the first
part of the month. But, when there's a rash of new stuff coming out, I
check twice a month just to be sure I'm totally up to date. But, I don't
really get why you would need to run it floppy or CD. You can just install
it on your hard drive like any other program. I sets up a icon on the
desktop and you just click that and run it. Or, you can run it from DOS.

Just thought to let you know that F-Prot updates a lot more frequently
than you mentioned. Subscribe to their alert service at
<http://alerts.f-prot.com/>. I've received about 12 definition updates
this month alone.

Hmmm, they must be in competition with Adaware for the most updates now.
;-))

With the Netsky and others out there they may have increased their updates.
Used to be only once a month or so. But, I haven't checked their update
schedule recently.

Thank you for the 'update.' I'll check it out. :-)

Run error checking or scandisk first, the FAT table may be reporting
incorrect disk space. Just a thought.

Actually I just tried running F-Prot from a WinXP "DOS" window and it
works just fine. I also tried booting to WinXP Safe Mode Commamd Line
and it works there just fine also. Of course there are still WinXP
services running, etc. But in Safe Mode Command Line, there should be
a minimum of such services.

Still, it would be nice to have a boot CD for those times when you
can't get to Windows.

As far as you can tell.

I have heard (but can't confirm) that F-Prot for DOS has other
issues with XP than just plain "not-working". Specifically I had
heard about it failing to scan some directories. Whether it was
due to certain characters in the full path name or the length of
the full path name I don't recall - but you might want to look
into this before placing too much faith in using the wrong version
for your OS.

Well, I am not placing any "faith" in F-Prot. Yes, there were only
5,000 plus files scanned. Maybe long file names didn't get scanned.
Anyway, I have Avast! 4 and NOD32 which give me all the protection
that I need. Thanks for your concern.
