Norton Cannot Be Removed and Disables Competing Products.
Can’t anything be done about Norton attacking other programs? Over 6
months ago Norton Ghost stopped working. Norton said the version was
so old they wouldn’t support it so I uninstalled and deleted it.
However it kept coming back. This led me to doubt Norton Antivirus so
I tried install other anti-viruses but other anti virus programs but
Norton Anti virus deleted them. Then I found that Norton antivirus
could not be uninstalled. I tried support but they said they could do
nothing. The problem was antivirus and ghost would reinstall the other
program but I kept calling and found someone who agreed to help. He
really wasn’t supposed to. To be clear there was another department
that was supposed uninstall my version of Norton anti-virus but they
never answered the phone. It took nearly ten hours for customer
service to remove both antivirus and ghost. The reason was Norton
hides its files all over the hard drive and has to be uninstalled by
hand.

Ok so I get bit defender and elephant drive. They work great. Norton
never ever worked as good as either program. Bit Defender gives me
much more information and control in dealing with a virus. Elephant
Drive actually worked unlike Ghost.

Three days ago Elephant Drive stops working. I do all the erase and
install stuff and make sure everything’s right and then I chat with
the Elephant Drive help. We go through everything again. Then we check
the registry and it’s a little strange but ok Then one last thing, a
nested file for elephant drive, so down and down we go and hiding deep
in an Elephant Drive file is Norton Ghost.

That doesn’t work. I ran the removal tool several times before I
called Norton customer service. They ran it at least twice before they
manually removed the program. All the removal tool does is hide the
program it does not remove it.

called Norton customer service. They ran it at least twice before they

The removal tool actually does remove the program - the files, folders, and
registry entries.

If it isn't working for you, restart in Safe Mode as Administrator, and
remove the folders and registry entries manually. If you don't know how
to do this, it might be a good idea to hire someone who does.

Have them back up the drive before doing this, just to be on the safe side.

people I could find at Norton do it.

3. I did everything you recommended to remove Norton myself and more,
far more but it was never completely removed. I rebooted 3 times.

4. I would think I removed Norton and it would rebuild it self. That’s
right I would think it was gone and a few days later it would return.

5. I paid Norton for help.

6. They advised me to have one of their people remove the program but
several techs refused because it was too hard.

7. I finally found someone from Norton who agreed to help. Norton did
not charge because they knew Norton was in the wrong.

8. The tech from Norton tried everything you said to remove Norton and
more far more. (He had me reboot the computer at least 4 times.)

IT DIDN’T WORK

7. Then he removed Norton by hand. It took about 7 hours to do it. He
got help from his boss and coworkers, He also had to stop and read
manuals. I even think he made a few phone calls.

8. I have been Norton free for about 8 months.

9. I got Elephant Drive an online storage service about 4 months
ago.

10. Norton Ghost is a backup program and as such is in competition
with Elephant Drive.

11. Norton Products often attack and disable competing products.

12. I have been using Elephant Drive for about 4 months and suddenly
it stopped working so I got on the chat line with someone from
Elephant Drive who tried to get it working without success.

13. He had me look through an Elephant Drive file that had nested
files and one of the files said Norton Ghost.

Months after Ghost was removed by experts it returned. My guess is
that Norton is burned into ROM by Dell. I’m not saying Ghost or any
other Norton product is installed in ROM only that there is something
in ROM that keeps Norton around and helps Norton attack competing
products.

This statement suggests to me that you do not fully understand the full
implications of what you are saying "I would think I removed Norton and
it would rebuild it self. That’s right I would think it was gone and a
few days later it would return.". If Norton is removed it stays removed
unless you do something to restore it. Thus if you restored your system
from a backup then you would have Norton again but that requires action
by the user. Restoration does not occur without user input. Norton Ghost
is capable of providing backup images. However you say you removed that
programme. Elephant Drive is an Online Data Storage system and it could
be that you have reintroduced Norton from restoring from your Elephant
Drive facility. We can only guess! It's for you to say whether this is
what you have done?

1. You admit that Norton is hard to uninstall not mentioning the fact
that Norton programs Norton Programs, which means that Norton wants
them hard to uninstall. As Norton wants their programs to be hard to
uninstall it stands to reason that Norton will do everything it can to
prevent the user from uninstalling Norton as long as they can get away
with it.

attacks competing programs.

3. I cannot accept the fact that you are confused as to the meaning be
free of. Maybe you are so desperate to find an answer that you
confused yourself. Went you asked if when I said “Norton Free” I only

shouldn’t have to explain the meaning of the word “free.” When you
look at an ingredient label and it says “peanut free” it doesn’t mean
that they wish they didn’t have any peanuts in there; it mans WITHOUT.

Programmers protect certain files so their program will run reliably.
I just found out from an engineer at Elephant Drive that there was no
legal way a file named Norton Ghost would be found in where it was
found. It shouldn’t ever be found in those kinds of Elephant Drive
files.

The person from Elephant Drive made sure to say he was not accusing
Norton of anything only that the file shouldn’t have been there. I’m
sure people in the computer business are afraid of Norton (most Norton
employees are good hard working, talented people) because those who
run Norton are powerful and ruthless.

more, far more but it was never completely removed. I rebooted 3

machine came with Norton or you installed Norton it is your responsibility
to know that Norton does not have a totally reliable product (as you found
out.) If in doubt about a program, ask the question here before you install
it.

The best way to ensure that Norton is totally uninstalled, in your case, is
to totally reinstall Windows from scratch, don't use any of your backup
except for individual data files and your programs from their original
disks.

As for the MVP war, I'm not an MVP and don't really care to be one. I am on
this group to help others, not for any type of recognition. My advice is
generally sound, but like others, I occasionally make mistakes. So, whether
you have the right to use MVP or not, I don't really care. If you help
people to the best of your ability that is all that matters.
