If I understand correctly, you can work in Safe Mode but not open or save
files. The fact that you can get further in safe mode than you can normally
suggests a problem with an add-in, and the fact that you still have a
problem points to something else outside Word, with which Word interacts.
Assuming you've followed all the troubleshooting that Graham has posted
links to, Graham's other suggestions of hardware drivers (especially the
printer) is a good one. Beyond that, assuming the problem is only with Word
(and that, Excel, say, has no problems opening and saving files) I, too,
don't know what else to suggest.
