The only valid limitation is a cardiovascular disease. The median age of winter swimmers here is ca. 50.

When at Lympstone (CTCRM) whilst enjoying the commando course we had a old dam which was full of water and as I enduring this course in mid winter 19662/3 and of course the water was frozen so the very helpful instructor would break the ice which was about 2" thick so we wouldn't hurt ourselves when we fell in. This was done after we had completed the Tarzan course course so we were were knackered before we started and you cross the on top of the rope pulling yourself along with your hands, one leg pushing and one leg hanging down when you were in the center of the dam you were instructed to do a regain which meant you swung down keeping hold of the rope with your hands and then do a regain(return to the previous position on top of the rope), most of us fell in. BRRRRRRR:cry:

And even today they break the ice so you don't break anything when you fall in.
That's very good of them!
