I feel your frustration.

When I was deciding what I wanted in my new computer to replace my five
year XP machine I thought I'd try Vista but wanted to be able to do run
XP in a VM just in case I had some apps that wouldn't run in Vista. I
also wanted VM for testing some apps, and maybe running some stuff very
securely. So I figured I would want lots of RAM. With 32 bit apps
inability to address 4G I selected the 64 bit version of Vista Home
Premium and like you am finding that Microsoft's Virtual PC does not
support it. So I can either spend another $250 to upgrade (and is that
a smooth just pop the disk in upgrade?) or buying VMware Workstation for
$180. This was not expected.

You need the 64-bit version which can be downloaded from:

BUT I DON'T WANT VISTA BUSINESS! It doesn't do the Vista Home Premium
features that a HOME computer needs! All I want to do is run XP (or 98) as a
VM in Vista Home PREMIUM-FOR-CHRIST-SAKE! What the bleep is PREMIUM if it
doesn't include VM?

OK. I'll give it try. It would be a HUGE BOON to my use of Vista if it would
work (kudos from the wife & kids too!)...

I am getting ready to try virtual box, which is now owned by sun micro
systems. I really wanted virtual PC but I called Micosoft on a few
occasions, and they said no virtual in premium. only because of the EULA.
Which is bullsh*t. in my opion. They are forcing people to use otehr
compaines stuff.

They have very recently changed the EULA and you may now install Virtual PC
in Vista Home versions.

I installed VirtualBox_1.5.4_Win_x86.msi a month ago and used it for three
weeks to try another OS (Ubuntu). It caused no major problem, except I seem
to remember that VB did not support parallel ports, which was a little
unhelpful as one of my printers integrates better with its driver via LPT1
than USB2. It was easy to set up and use, and easy to uninstall. Doug
