No more shortcut arrows on the icons on desktop

And justr type in command prompt

Type

cmd /c tasklist >"%userprofile%\desktop\tl.txt"
and post the text file that appears on your desktop.

Ok first of all I'm a bit lost as that page gives more than 1 or 2 options
as to how to trouble shoot. Below is a copy of the content of the tl.txt
file on desktop after a normal boot up ( I say normal as it's the one I
usually use as in the past I had to disable some items and cannot seem to
get them to disappear from the list so I continue to boot up in the same
mode as when I disabled them). Ok I'm starting to see a light here LOL
(yeah DUH) Let me reboot in "normal" mode and see if that file works.

Ok I reset the selective start up to normal and this is the resulting tl.txt
file (if you can be more specific about which way to do the trouble
shooting on that link you gave me it would be helpful).

David can you please be a bit more specific as to which of the various ways
it says to TS the problem?

Thanks,

Doug

Do you have two video cards, a matrox and an nvidia.? nvsvc32 is a nvidia prog and hgcctl95 is Matrox prog.

Rundll32 is an app that starts many other apps. It's essential to windows (eg it starts control panel applets). But can also start nasty programs. Just with it's name in the list it's not possible to tell what it does. Some nasty's use this name but put the file in a non standard directory - so one may have legit and non legit versions of this. Still probably a normal entry.

These are the only 4 that are questionable. I'm not saying anything is wrong with these - just give the files a quick check to make sure they are expected on your machine.

I assume all the files starting CT are Soundblaster files. Most are.

As to MSConfig.

Clear Startup items (on the General Tab), Reboot, Does it work.

Clear Win.ini and System.ini. Reboot Does it work.

System Services is harder. Installs won't work with out some being enabled. On Services tab disable all non MS services. Reboot. Does it work.

Then turn off all services but Windows Installer Service and Remote Procedure Call (WIS needs RPC). Your computer will be very sick as not much will be working by now. Does this help.

Reenable everything.

David I'm back online..... Sorry I panicked and mailed you offlist from
other machine....

Went to services from start menu......do I need to re-enable all to
automatic and then start svc? or is there a way to do them all at once?

Just sent you a mail. Full details in mail (not all are automatic). But if MSCONFIG can't do it then services is one by one. But I've given you where MSConfig stores the list of ones it disabled and a list from my machine of default status.

:) Now I see what you meant by sick....no biggie.....alls back to normal,
including my lack of icons in the systray, and my inability to run that
infernal file

Disabling SSDP service and Universal Plug n Play service to cure the icons.

I look at the services list. CSV's are fine.

Seems I (another duh) downloaded the wrong file......got the right one and
it updated my crashing browser and OE just fine. Disabled the SSDP etc and
alls well there too.

Many many thanks David..

Excellant. That hta I sent you I use for viewing my bank statements, that come tab delimited. Just had to change field names to make it a Services lister.

See my web site at www.mvps.org/serenitymacros and the 2000 Word Tips page, the Macro Finder page, and Serenity Macro page foe examples of that technology on a web page. HTA are web files that aren't restricted by security (so that can do useful things). They are text files like all web pages.
