No Longer a Flood

At the end of the day, the point I am making is that not everyone can
use a KillFile

Everyone can use a killfile. They may choose not to however.
and not everyone can access newsgroup with a news
client.
everyone can access newsgroup with a news client.

Assuming people can obtain a computer, or have one, and can get
internet access then they can access a newsgroup with a news client.
They may choose not to however.
Dont keep saying "all you have to do is use a killfile".

If you don't like certain posts/posters...

All you have to do is use a killfile. :-)

I was just trying to make the point that this statement made by someone
earlier in the thread (specifically point 2) ... "Nobody has to use
Google Groups to read Usenet unless either 1) they want to, or 2) they
are just plain clueless." ... was wrong. You shouldn't make a sarcastic
response like that unless you know your facts. This showed that the
person making it was suffering from point 2 themselves!

As to accessing newsgroups at work, why shouldn't I? I actually use the
computer / programming ones quite a bit. The idea of asking a question
if you're having problems or helping out someone who is encountering
the same problem you did and solved is what newsgroups are about. I've
always managed this through Google Groups so never needed to enquire as
to whether our I.T. infrastructure could be extended to open port 119
on our company firewall.

As for checking ACF at work, again, why not? Alot of the software I
find there I can use at work too (as long as it is free for commercial
use too before anyone moans). Programmers Text Editors, PDF creators
etc etc etc. I prefer to use the same software at work as I do at home
if I can help. Saves learning two things.

use a KillFile and not everyone can access newsgroup with a news
client. Dont keep saying "all you have to do is use a killfile".

One possible work around, although I'll admit, far from perfect is
to use a script contained in a bookmark to selectively
remove posts by flooders after opening ACF in google groups.

I've posted a crude example for Internet Explorer and google's
old (non beta groups -preferably set to show 100 posts a page)
here:- http://shootagain.spymac.net/ (called Trolls.URL)
(works by deleting entries from the current webpage matching a
regular expression)

NB IE always gives a warning when scripts are added to favourites.

To use it add it to IE's favorites (add it to links if you want it
available from the taskbar). Visit
http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?n...ow=1&group=alt.comp.freeware&safe=off&start=0

then click on the "Trolls" favorite will remove entries where
the last post was made by Tramp or Proteanthread.

( A neater solution would be to write a simple HTML
application which could automatically filter out posts
when you open the page);

Cool!
Actually I don't need it because I'm filtering them with my newsreader, but
I want to say to you that it works like a charm also with Firefox :-)

Go to this page [takes a while to DL]:
<http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en>

Scroll down page and choose a Google of a country other than USA, such
as Canada or Australia etc. This will open a Google site for that
country. Next choose Groups.

You'll now find that you have GOGG (Good Old Google Groups) as it was
before they gave us Google Groups 2. How long they'll stay this way I
don't know. But I'm making use of it while I still can.

To shorten your time waiting for the above link to DL, here's a few you
can try right away:

<http://www.google.ca>
<http://www.google.com.au>
<http://www.google.co.nz>
<http://www.google.ie>

Thanks I've used that before and then it disappeared I didn't realize
it was because of the domain extension,hopefully Google will have the
bugs ironed out before Groups 2 is the only option.
