In reality, this extreme posting by Tramp is now a Tsunami and no longer
just a Flood.
Yes, one could killfile him/her.
Better if Tramp would take the suggestions offered in other post(s) and
simply provide a daily updated link as in
Today, we'll cover the E's and F's or some such thing.
Generally, he/she is showing a total lack of respect and that is truly
unfortunate.

Just my 1.5 cents, oh, wait, the exchange rate is better these days so it's
about 1.70 cents.

why post your message here instead of alt.comp.freeware.dicussion?
Killfile it, and get over it.
at least his(hers) posts actually deal with freeware and not whiners
who complain how the world doesn't run according to their wishes.

Unfortunately, Google Groups readers cannot do this and these tend to be
the newbies who are most likely to be easily put off.

Nobody has to use Google Groups to read Usenet unless either 1) they want
to, or 2) they are just plain clueless.

Now who's plain clueless elaich ?????

I too have the same problem where I can only check ACF on the web (port
80) and this flooding lark is a pain in the butt. It was nice to log on
in the morning and see a page or two of new posts / discussions. Now I
have to wade thru masses of (no install) crap to try and filter out the
interesting stuff. Its gonna get to the point where its gonna be too
painful and give up. I guess others will do the same.

Phew. Feel better now I have that off my chest

Unfortunately, Google Groups readers cannot do this

If people don't like Google capability then they can get a newsreader.
Like many here already do. Also, if they want to keep with Google then
they can ignore posts by any supposed flooder they take a dislike to.
and these tend to be
the newbies who are most likely to be easily put off.

If newbies are put off by people posting about freeware in a freeware
newsgroup then they obviously shouldn't be here.

I keep up with acf via Google Groups because I choose to do so.

I have GG set to digest mode. Although I may receive several digest
emails per day, it's a simple matter to scan through them and pick the
posts that interest me - which I then read on the web.

To make it easier to scan through each batch of digest emails I start
with the most recent one - which (naturally) includes the latest post/s
to a topic. Then I work backwards through the digest emails picking up
any topics not covered in the newer emails. This way I can simply
discard any earlier emails that don't include topics I haven't already
scanned.

This way I don't waste time trying to keep up with individual posts to
the ng. I can pick out topics that interest me, follow threads if I
want to, and avoid becoming frustrated when the volume of posts is
high.

This is a pretty productive ng (productive in terms of the volume of
posts) regardless of whether or not folks like PT and Tramp make
multiple posts. My method of reading the ng means the additional
multiple posts (which some of you like to call floods) don't affect me
much.

This group has been of much benefit to me, and although I'm new I
haven't been put off by PT and Tramp. What I do find unnecessary is
(1) the constant criticism about "flooding" from a few people, and
(2) the language a few people use. Surely it's possible to disagree
without abusing each other?

If newbies are put off by people posting about freeware in a freeware
newsgroup then they obviously shouldn't be here.
That's stupid; obviously you are experienced enough to recognize the
flooders and killfile them, so am I.

(and what a relief, I stuck it as long as I could as I only like to
killfile malice or filth).

But how is a newcomer (perhaps if you didn't use that pompous patronising
word "newbie" you'd be more tolerant, most of us, if not you, are new to
something somewhere), to distinguish between a flooder and the helpful,
knowledgeable people who don't post as much, and so are not perceived by a
new subscriber, who would then be justified in looking elsewhere for info?

(Wow, that question mark was a long time coming, must be I need an editor)

Registration and use of this NetNews service are free of charge. This
server is operated by the computer center of Freie Universität Berlin,
Germany. (port 119)

Yes, one could killfile him/her.

I did, on day 1 of his presence. I haven't seen 1 flooded posting of
his since.

Other than those who like to gripe about flooding, this group is a
pleasent experience.

If using a web browser and Google Groups to access NNTP groups makes
killfiling impossible, then I would suggest using alternatives. There
are excellent freeware news-clients readily available and also well
established and patronised free news services, such as Individual
<http://news.individual.net/>

For me [using Xnews], adding a poster to a killfile is no more
difficult than selecting a name in the "From" list and hitting the "K"
key on my keyboard.
Just my 1.5 cents

ditto.

3) only port 80
Pardon the ignorance, but what does "only port 80" mean? I thought
computers have several thousand "ports." I am not being sarcastic; I
honestly do not know what this means.

You are correct, but some ISPs/Networks only limit traffic to certain ports.

Please explain why you are restricted to port 80 and why you cannot use
news.individual.net and a newsreader like Xnews.
