From both machines, at a command prompt, type in:

net start <enter>

and post the results please.

Thanks

Kevin,

Then that pretty much answers my question, unless you have installed
something that has a DNS server in it then you don't have a DNS server.
Have you disabled any services?
Run the command Ace gave you in a command prompt: "net start" (without
quotes) and post the results. This will list the running services.

For the net start command results, please refer to my
reply to Ace's message.

Have you enabled packet filtering on any interfaces?
Are all ports open?
Packet filtering on interfaces cannot take the place of a good firewall
because it does not allow for port redirection for outgoing connections, and
you have to open too many ports to get functionality. I suggest you use a
firewall or get a good router that has a firewall.

No packet filtering installed, as far as I am aware. And
if all port are open: how do I test that, please?

Thank you, Kevin.

Stephan

Kevin, I don't believe he has DNS running on this box. If he did, he would
be getting the NATHLP error in his event viewer, which I think I asked him
if he was getting any errors. Kind of getting to be a long thread at this
point.

I hope he doesn't have DNS on this machine. That would be the cause of the
whole thing. I was somewhat assuming these are both Pro machines since he
wasn't even sure what I meant by "if AD is running".

Ace,

To be honest, I did get a few error messages. Don't know
if they are relevant, but here they are:

On PC-1, There are two error messages that I get
frequently (like about each time the machine is booted)
- ID 3, Source cannot be found
- ID 7000, Legacy Modem Driver service failed to start

And today there was a new one that I hadn't seen before:
- ID 7011, Timeout on Dnscache

On PC-2, I get the same ID 7000 driver service errors, and
yesterday there were also these two warnings:
- ID 8021, The browser being unable to retrieve a list of
servers
- ID 3019, Failure of connection type determination

Ace,
I see what you mean about pinging. But, just for testing, did you alter that
reg entry to just see if it works? You can always *EASILY* change it back to
the original setting, just export that key, then save it as a .reg file. If
it doesn't work, then double click on that file and it will put it back in,
or just change it manually.

Ok... if you already tried it...

Haven't *YET*, but I will do later if you want me to - I'm
running out of time for today...

Trying to narrow this sucker down. Ok, let's try another tactic... are there
any services turned off on PC2?

Services such as:
DHCP Client Service
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service
Workstation Service
DNS Client service

Services; see my other reply: seems these are all there on
PC2.
On PC1:
Is File and Print sharing enabled?
Is there a personal firewall installed?

File and Print sharing enabled on both the Internect
Connection and the Local Area Connection of PC1 (Do I
really need that for the Internet Connection?).
Has this machine ever been infected, such as with the QHOSTS virus?
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/tr ojan.bootconf.html

Nope.

Just trying to look at all possibilities at this point. Maybe you can force
an IP to:
IP 192.168.0.100
mask 255.255.255.0
gate 192.168.0.1
DNS 4.2.2.2

Then try it again.

Tried this on PC2, no changes.. (i.e., can still ping IPs,
can't ping names and obviously if I nslookup it returns a
Can't find name for address 4.2.2.2: No response from
server, etc.)

Then switch it back to DHCP.

**PLEASE NOTE**: for PC1 I wasn't using DHCP, but a static
192.168.0.2 instead, as it refuses to obtain an IP address
dynamically (even though it had DHCP enabled). See the
resulting IPCONFIG below for PC1 in this case.

Do you have another machine, such as a laptop, then you can try and put up
on your network as well and see if that experiences the same thing? I'm
trying to narrow down if it's the workstation or your
machine set for ICS.

I understand. Would be nice, but haven't got that option
open easily..

Maybe even switch them around and try it?

Actually, first tried to install the modem on the other
PC, but in attempting so I was getting allsorts of nasty
driver problems (even after installing update drivers
supplied on request by my ISP, .. you can see all the
trouble I've been having with this USB modem, boo-hoo, -
even more so, now wish I started with a router modem in
the first place!!)

Ok, thanks for posting that, so it doesn't seem like you're running DNS

Wow, what a mess! I have a feeling that either the PPPoE installation on
PC1 is corrupted or you shared the wrong interface or did it incorrectly and
saying this because DHCP is not working, otherwise you would not be getting
the APIPA (Auto Private IP Addr) of 169.254.x.x.

Did you share the correct interface or share it correctly or configure it
correclty? The external interface is what's needed to be shared.

The real way to test it is to get another computer or laptop on the network.
If it doesn't get a DHCP address, then obviously it's PC1 that's not
configured properly. But my feeling at THIS JUNCTURE is that PC1 is the
problem.

No, F&P and MS Client is NOT needed on the external interface.

Take a look at these XP articles. I know you have W2k, but they are very
similar...

This goes back to what I just posted above today. PC1's driver is NOT
configured properly and therefore ICS is not working due to it. Notice the
one main error (Event ID 7000, Source: Service Control Mgr) saying the
service failed to start? That's a HUGE red flag right there.

I would check the doco's on that and also check those links I gave you on
it, hopefully it will answer all your questions.

Or just get a DSL/Cable router and ask your ISP for a DSL modem with an RJ45
connection.
