still trying to figure the difference between Binary News Reader and Binary
News Reaper

which one is the best for download binaries?

The freeware version of the "Binaries News Reaper" which Paul mentioned
unfortunately can't handle yEnc encoded files- a feature Outlook Express
also lacks. PowerGrab will decode yEnc encoded files, which is a Good
Thing. I use the freeware XNews, which is similarly capable:
http://xnews.newsguy.com/ Here's a tutorial on how to set up and use
XNews: http://xnews.newsguy.com/sizer/ XNews requires no actual install-
you just unzip it into a folder and launch the exe file.

Here's the official faq of the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3 newsgroups, which
also has some newsreader recommendations: http://www.mp3-faq.org/faq1.html

Ian.

I think that is Gravity (Because of the image gallery which I consider
useful).
Opinions may vary, everybody has his/her favorite newsreader.

Just wanted to correct the above statement. BNR2 (Binary News Reaper)
*does* decode yEnc files.
From the site- http://www.bnr2.org/bnrfeat.html
"The new BNR2 version brings some additional features, as follows:
[...]
yEncode support . BNR2 supports yEncode, the new encoding method that
greatly reduces the overhead of posting binary articles on Usenet."

One of the best I've found is Pan. A really nice interface, YENC support,
posting, previews, versions for many different OS. However, I use the
Windows version and Pan has an unfortunate predilection for crashing. I can
use it for hours and all is fine, then a particular post will make Pan crash
again and again. Perhaps this isn't the case for the other versions of Pan.
In spite of this problem, I still like it more than any other binary
downloader.

Fidolook adds yEnc support to Outlook Express (Among many other
things).

which one is the best for download binaries?
I use Binary News Reaper 2 (BNR2) for multiple news servers and across
multiple newsgroups. It works very well. A few bugs, but will
happily go along downloading for days at a time without crashing
(windows will crash first)

Power Grab is also excellent if you only want one server and the last
time I checked it wouldn't do a download across multiple newsgroups.
That is very handy for long multipart files - no group/server may have
the complete binary, but all the parts may be on available on all the
servers or groups (the reason to use BNR2).

If you want long files (like movies) get quick par and learn to use it
(it can patch and work around missing parts - if the poster posts a
few par files)

The search page will show a file in all the groups you have it in, so
you can download across ng's.
And running multiple installs is totally easy.

Where PG falls down is with incompletes, which it just doesn't do.

Seems to me I was downloading incompletes across different servers and
manually stitching them together with a yenc client. (needless to say
- I had to really want a file to put up with all that)

With bnr2 there's no need. Put similar groups in a single folder and
treat them like one newsgroup (macro groups?) ditto the servers.

I have 4-5 news servers and had four installs of pg running at one
time. My monitor was festooned with Post It notes, and index cards
keeping track of which server or group had which parts.

bnr2 changed all that.

BNR2 used to crash after running it for a few weeks. but with version
0.13.3.439 (beta) it is more stable than Windows.

Just thought of something . . . PG had a bug where it would crash when
a connection was lost. I'm on dialup and an electrical storm can play
havoc with a connection, so that was a major irritant.

I would have to kill it in windows (not responding) and reload and
resume downloads.

If, by chance, it would fail after the headers (or group list) were
downloaded they would be lost and have to be reloaded - the
work-around for that malady was to download the headers, close and
reopen the program, (then the headers were on disk and would stay
put).

Does it still suffer from that?

I checked the website and read the revision notes and didn't see it
mentioned.

While it will allow multiple connections to one server, it won't allow
connections to different servers.

I'm not knocking it . . . Power Grab is much better than a lot of
for-pay newsreaders. It just didn't work as well as BNR2 for me.

I do like the screen setup better with PG, and like the graph with
download speed. With BNR it has a numerical indicator for each server
- but that is not as easy to read as a graph. I like the latency
expressed as a percent - BNR makes no attempt to predict the latency.

I don't think I've ever experienced this
