Hi Guys,

Can anyone please advise on which free (obviously) FTP program to use
please. If anyone does reply to this (thank you) I would be most grateful if
you could please point me in the right direction.

Many thanks.

Dave.

I've not tried many of them -- once I found FTP Wanderer, I've not
bothered with anything else.

(He also does an excellent and free FTP server, if you have need of
one.)

Nice program. You should submit this as pricelessware for next
vote.

Oh, it was up for voting last time; it missed being included because
of the rule that "programs with fewer than X votes are discarded".

There was a fairly long discussion on this, as minor-use programs can
be excluded from Priceslessware not only on the basis of proportionate
voting for programs of a their type, but also by not having enough
total votes. (There's no FTP server -- at all -- listed in
Priceslessware for this reason: not enough people voted for FTP
servers, so the category was just omitted from the final list.)

(In other words, even if a program gets 100% of the votes which were
cast for a certain type of specialist utility, it may still be excluded
from Pricelessware because only a handful of people -- in total -- use
such programs.)

Well, it's one I'll recommend from now on. I was unaware of it until
now...guess I missed those discussions. Nice size, nice features. An
excellent ftp program for sure.

Dunno. I was unaware of the program until you mentioned it so I went
to check it out. I'm not a heavy ftp user so I tend to lag on ftp
knowledge. However, the ftp wanderer program that Harvey suggested is
excellent.

I've actually been using it since it was first released...... not much of a
fan of FTP Wanderer (not sure why, I just can't get into it (p'raps I'm just
too used to FTPx)).

This has been my first choice for FTP programs for a long
time, too.

The license I have with my copy (v1.00 (Build 010)) says-
"FTPx Corp. (hereinafter FTPx) grants you a limited
non-exclusive license to use the SOFTWARE free of charge if
you are a student, faculty member or staff member of an
educational institution or your use of the SOFTWARE is
exclusively at home for non-commercial purposes."

Is there a new license with the current download?

I've read through the thread and looked at a couple of the programs'
sites and I still don't have the answer to a question that's been on my
mind for some time...

While it's rare, and not critical, I do on occasion access an ftp
server. For me, it's a simple click on a link or typing an address into
IE, and there I am. I can browse the server, upload and/or download (as
permissions allow) -- no muss, no fuss, no extra software. All the ftp
sites I access are automatically put into my My Network Places folder
(W2Ksp4). I can add them to my Favorites folder as well.

So here's the dumb question: why would I need another program to do what
I'm already doing with IE? And no, I'm not trying to be argumentative..
I really wanna know.

If the software you're using meets the needs you currently
have then there's no reason to change. Really, why fix it if
it ain't broke.

At some point, you might need more than what you get from
using Internet Explorer; that's when you will be more
interested in what the other available programs offer.

There's no "magic bullet" when it comes to software. Each
program has its own strengths and weaknesses and as you
refine your toolbox you will discover which tools work best
for you.

FTP Explorer was free for non-commercial use until recently (not sure
when the change was made). The site currently offers:

FTP Explorer 662KB v 1.00.10

ftp://ftp.ftpx.com/pub/ftpx/ftpx.zip

which has a *free* license - for a chosen few. . .
similar to the *free* license for WS_FTP LE. . . :(

If you are a STUDENT, FACULTY or STAFF MEMBER of an EDUCATIONAL
INSTITUTION, you are eligible for a FREE LICENSE . . .
</q>

Does anyone know what the last "free for non-commercial use" version of
FTP Explorer is? Can it be distributed? I suspect someone here will
offer to host this app if a file is available.

While the readme.txt (dated 1997) inside the archive reads:

"FTP Explorer is FREE for home or educational use."

Me thinks it was easier to recommend a nice ftp client in the "good
old days", when WS_FTP (LE) was about the only ftp client for Windows
anyone knew, and the LE version was commonly available "free for
non-commercial users". Not like current WS_FTP LE; "free for
educational users only" and requires registration to get.

Btw: the older (but not as old as ftpx!)
free for non-commercial use WS_FTP LE,
can be found here
<http://home.att.net/~short.stop/ws_ftp32.zip>
(still very good IMHO)

All the best,
