Did you read my other post about having bookmarked directories and how when
I removed these it then worked as fast as IE.
Maybe you are experiencing the same problem?

Maybe, but I doubt it. I have very few directories. I do however have
thousands of bookmarks and a bookmark file of over 1MB. Thanks for
the suggestion however.

Fx now stores favicons within the bookmarks.html file itself. It may
make a difference for you to turn them off, I dunno. I think setting
the value of browser.chrome.favicons to false in about:config should do
that, but I have not tried it since I don't want to lose my icons.
