Just back from a break and still get "Could not connect to the internet" when attempting
to update.

What firewalls or other Internet security software might be involved?

Bingo!
You made me remember that I'd just downloaded a new ZoneAlarm(free) update.
I checked and found that it had decided to block MSAS (not to mention a few other things).
I've never had that happen before on an upgrade.
Anyway, changed the settings and I'm back in business.

Thanks for the memory "tweak".

Great--glad it was that easy. This kind of issue is seen with increasing
frequency--folks add another $10 on an upgrade to their standard antivirus
to get a "suite" and don't realize that they are getting a firewall in
addition--so it becomes harder to ask the right questions in
troubleshooting.

Actually it wasn't a case of "..adding another $10..". It was a new release of Zone Alarm
(free).
For some reason they blocked MSAS? I've never had this happen before (I've used ZA for a
couple of years) and have always updated the application when it was available.
Typically you'd tell it that you were upgrading and all would be well. This release,
however, decided to add some items that were not there before as well as block some that
were set to "allow" (MSAS being the major one).
I see some posts related to the same problem but they're not detailed enough to indicate
if it's the exact same problem, i.e. the message ("Cannot connect to the internet") is
the same.

I'll assume that it's something I did, but I don't know what!

FWIW the ZA version I upgraded to is V6.0.631.002

Thanks, Rob--gotta try to remember to ask that question in those threads.
