New computer - PC Specialist?

oops ... I need to retire

So sorry, my fault ... that's on-board sound, so it will be the motherboard drivers you'll need. :o

Try these ... most of us never need to update the sound drivers ... also, Windows Update Site may provide drivers, use their Custom button when checking.

I have personally seen XP get 'confused' before and insist you have an Avance sound chip instead of the Realtec ... I believe, just to add to the confusion, that Realtec bought Avance out and use their chips also.

Your 'error' is definitely associated with your sound drivers. It says so. :(

To be honest I didn't even register that you said sound card, and just went ahead and downloaded the drivers for the onboard sound. The version I DLed was 5.10.0.6030 but the link that you gave me has 5.10.0.5900 as the latest. I am DLing this version now to replace 6030, but to be honest, 5900 was the version I was already using anyway so I can't see that it would fix it. When you say I need to upgrade my motherboard drivers, do you mean something other than the audio? I have to say that I am more than a little bit lost as to what to try next!

Hi hi again

I just wanted to let you all know that my computer seems to be running problem free. In the end I completely uninstalled all audio drivers, rebooted, went to windows update, and there was a driver specifically designed to make things work between an nvidia card and the asus motherboard, so no annoying reboots anymore!

I especially wanted to thank floppybootstamp and muckshifter, you two were a huge help. Thanks! That goes to everyone else who had suggestions too.

PC Specialist provided a good machine at a good price in my opinion, though they could have been a little speedier on getting the machine to me.

Good news Charlotte, glad all worked out well in the end :thumb:

(and I may have to revise my views on those MS hardware drivers eh? ;) )

I always go to WUS first ... don't always use the drivers though. ;)

Charlotte,

Thanks for letting us know. :thumb:
