New Boinc Version 5.4.9

All seems to be OK and Boinc is running smoothly. Benchmarks as follows:

Before upgrading to Boinc 5.4.9 (version running 5.2.13 with tweak)

18/06/2006 12:46:51|| 2389 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU

18/06/2006 12:46:51|| 7367 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

After upgrading to Boinc 5.4.9 (without tweaking)

18/06/2006 13:55:35|| 1728 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU

18/06/2006 13:55:35|| 3596 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

I guess I should tweak it! Yes/No

Boinc 5.4.9 (after tweaking)

18/06/2006 14:30:51|| 2842 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU

18/06/2006 14:30:51|| 11197 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

No issues :thumb:

Following is just my observation and there is nothing to be concerned about. I just thought I'd share it here.

  • The new version seems to be a bit aggressive in the sense that the cpu temps have gone up by about 2 to 3 Deg on average. I wonder if others have noticed this or not
  • The plus point however is the interface is much better and also the task showing upto three decimal points gives a good idea of the wu being in progress. The continuous progress is far better than in the previous version where the percentage was updated after few seconds.
  • After upgrading to the new version 5.4.9 and having applied the tweak I have noticed that the gap between claimed and granted has somehow widened. Not that it has affected the score but this is what I have observed.
Anyone care to comment?

I can only comment on your 3rd point - the new tweak together with new boinc seems to give a higher benchmark than before, hence the widening gap :thumb:

Out of interest, when examining some of my recent results, I found a couple where one of the other returns the quorum had a significantly higher claimed credit than mine, and as a result I got my full claimed credit - that machine must have been one powerful beast and also tweaked

Yes I also had this experience but only once when I noticed the other crunchers score was higher than mine but this is something which is not happening regularly. I guess most folks do not bother to update or tweak after installing. If they did the scoring would be much higher and the gap between claimed and granted would be narrow;)

Indeed, we can only hope for more tweaked powerful systems to come online - the majority of crunchers out there still seem to be running on smallish systems, so its just pot luck at the moment.

I dont know about your first point Quad, its been warmer here recently so temps are up a little anyway. :)

However i do agree with your 2nd and 3rd points, The BOINC manager looks better, updates more. (I remember with the old one, When you first opened it you used to wait for a second or two for it to update your progress. As it only updated the info every 5 seconds) :thumb:

My benchmarks have increased quite a lot too, (Pc Spec in sig)
Old BOINC (5.2.13) was around 7000 Dhrystone (Tweaked), i forget what the Whetstone was.

New BOINC (5.4.9)
Before Tweak
2023 Whetstone
3429 Dhrystone

After Tweak
2680 Whetstone
11208 Dhrystone

Sorry if my point did not make sense. I agree the temps are higher these days but I am talking about controlled evironment within the confines of the office where temps are maintained. If the temps were same as before and after tweaking, the result should have been same, but it is not. That is my point. :)

It made sense, But you didnt mention anything about a controlled enviroment, i assumed you were just generalizing. :)

My second candidate;
