so I'm wondering what key I hit to get a character invisible to
Edit.com.

[Ctrl]+[G] ?

Just a guess, could'a been anything. I hate edit.com.[Actually, I don't know
it well enough to hate it.] I use SPFPC or notepad instead.

My new keyboard is wireless, so I'm generally laying back, taking it easy.
So the cat keeps jumping onto my chest and I can no longer see the keyboard.
At first I thought it'd be an opportunity to improve my touch-typing. I gave
that up when she spread out and forced my hand against the space bar. Like
you say could'a been anything!

entering command /y /c somefile
Just figured it out. The command.com in the root is hidden + system by
default. Despite comspec being command.com in the Windows directory, if the
one in C:\ is set system, you get the 'Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart your
computer' message. Stripping system attributes from both command.coms fixes
the problem.

Apart from this being an issue of my batch reapplying the default
attributes, it's presumably an issue that doesn't arise if using the
mfd4life hack as intended, ie permanently, rather than as per my restoring
the original files when booting Windows.
