My Recent Document always emptied

Do you mean "My recent
documents"->Properties->Security->advanced->permission"
and adding the check

DENY to "Delete subfolders and files" and to "delete" entries

to the user Everyone?

However I tried... but what happens is the following:
- files (lnk) do not get deleted;
- in Start->Recent Docs there are no links.

This maybe is because even if the files are not deleted for the
security setting, some registry entries do get deleted... this could be
the reason for the inconsistence...

Reinstalling Windows does not necessarily fix the problem(s).

Hope this helps. Let us know.

On a clean install there will be no problem anymore... the problem is
that I will start to install my progs/stuff and, if I don't understand
the issue, maybe I'll come across it again

The lnk files in Recent are two types, Recent Documents menu and also History in standard File Open Dialogs (not office it has a similar folder for its own use at C:\Documents and Settings\David Candy\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Recent). The dialog history registry keys are stored under the Recent Docs registry keys. There is a policy for the dialogs (use regmon and open notepad open dialog and you'll see them - some apps only read the data first time a dialog is displayed while others read it each time it's displayed). Office has similar policy from memory but I don't have my Office technical docs at the moment and I also think there's version differences - but hey, you've got regmon.

When does the deletion happen. While the dialog is displayed (and Explorer save it settings now to save time - a tip on how to save setting without exiting).

Ctrl + Alt + Shift and Close or Cancel in the Shutdown dialog
Closes down Window's shell in a normal shutdown without logging off.. Use Task Manager's File - New Task (Run) ... dialog to start Explorer to restart the shell.

Shut down explorer and use cmd and regmon, and regedit (type them before you shutdown explorer or in Task Manager's File - New Task (Run) ... dialog) to monitor if at shut down or if it is at reinitialising - if indeed any reinitialising is done after a Shut Down dialog saving of settings..

Cett,
Do you use any toolbars that include a Pop-Up blocker, such as Yahoo Companion, also some security suites, such as Norton and McAfee may have the following feature. Some third party security programs, will automatically delete cookies, clear history and file caches, based on the settings, such as start-up, when the browser is closed, or at a predetermine time. You will need to go into Options/Preferences/Tools section, and make adjustments.

I used to use a program call FreeSurfer MarkII, if you set it to run in Silent Mode, it would block IE from creating History files. Also there was a cleaning program, that could something similar that you are experiencing.
