My PC is slowing down

I never used any AV software when I =used= MS and never got a virus. It
doesn't take a rocket scientist to recongnise a virus infected attachment.
I might use AV software if I still used windows but I'd have enough sense
to use it manually. Why buy a fast system and then run a bunch of crap in
the background?

Well, some people (the top-posting kind who think OE is a
well-designed program) lack the mental acuity to discern what is and
what is not a virus. Like infants they may need to be protected from
viruses, but at the cost of a responsive system.

Listen up, just because you say you can detect virii before you get it
and because you use some other form of mail client, doesn't make you a
prophet that we should all follow down the path you have made for YOURSELF.
This OE vs All other mail clients is utter BS. why not just KILL FILE all
that use OE. Frankly I think its the old 'Penis and gun' thing, Your client
is an extension I guess. I suppose your a AMD, Linux, endura person who
thinks he/she is holier than thou cause you don't use MS. Ever here of the
movie 'rebel without a cuase'? What a petty person you are.

Thanks all. What I'm going to do, is buy PC Cillin 2003. I ran PC Cillin
2002(it came with the motherboard) and the virus definitions were stopped as
it was valid for only 3 months. I didn't have any problems. Then I bought
Norton and this goddamn program stinks.

What is amazing is my computer is an Athlon 2500 and 756DDR Ram and 7200rpm
harddrive. Unbelievable!!. I guess most consumers don't know. they just go
to a shop and just buy it. For me the choice was yellow box or red box. I
chose the yellow one. Bad move.

Never will I buy another Norton product. The funny thing is about 3 years
ago I had another Norton product, Norton System Works and it also slowed up
the system.
I sold that computer soon after but I remember clearly how the computer's
performance starts struggling.

Norton "System Works" is such an oxymoron these days, isn't it? (I know
this thread doesn't necessarily refer to NSW, I'm just saying...)

I'm an adult. I don't need a software program to "protect" me. When
I download a questionable file, I scan it manually. No need to take
up system resources with bloated AV sitting in the background all the
time.

Uhhhh guy I hate to tell ya... but even by scanning a questionable file
manually, you are using a SOFTWARE PROGRAM TO PROTECT YOU. So...

It's just plain and simple, Norton stinks! Anything Norton stinks! Get rid
of it!

I'm sure I'm going to get flamed like a bitch for this ... but I've never
noticed a system slow-down from NAV auto-protect.

I'm running an Athlon XP1800+ with 512 MB PC2100 DDR (nothing special) I've
also run it on a Duron 1000MHz and a Duron 800MHz without any noticeable
system slow-down.

Symantec is also excellent when it comes to fixes for new and dangerous
viruses loose on the net ... When I was in school we were hit with
W32.Nimda, and Symantec was the first out with a fix (and a virus def.). And
believe me, I was scouring relentlessly for a fix ... having probably half a
dozen web severs on our network that my department was responsible for.

Now, if Clean Sweep ever finds it's way onto my system it gets nixed right
away ... that's the resource hog, in my experience.

I won't flame you *LOL*

I guess when it comes right down to it, it all depends on the system itself.
It ran okay on one of my systems, but on another it was a killer! Just from
my experience with it, I hate it :-)

Hell man, you can download the virus definitions from the site.
Unzip the file into the PC-cillin directory and edit the ini file to
see and use the new definition file. Delete the old one.
You can also manually update the engine and such.
Works for me!

I run PC cillin, AVG, occasionally whatcmacallit's House Call online,
hell even occasionally run F-Prot in a dos window. I do like PC
cillin automatically checking a file for viruses when I right click on
it. Other than that nothing runs in the background unless I
specifically enable for a scan.

Also occasionally run Adaware and Spybot.

I'll back you up instead. Concur. I've used NAV for years. Wouldn't be
without it. I've had temporary offline computers without it. They sure
as hell don't get any slower when NAV eventually gets installed.
