Now go check out www.omegacorner.com for his 'tweaked' ati drivers. They will
increse your IQ quality and smoothness in games. Read the whole site before
installing and pay close attention to the readme file before you install.

Congrats on the new card and welcome to the club. I switched from a TI4400 GF to
a 9700 pro and won't be going back to Nvidia now that I've seen the light.

Pluvious

Yeah, bet you won't be saying that for long. I went from a GF2 to a
9600 pro, and had nothing but crashes & lockups. :(

......and if everyone else had that problem ATI wouldnt sell a card. Do you
look at the NVidia group? Plenty of crashes and lock ups there too.

Have you let everyone know what the symptoms are so they can try to help? I
have a 9600 Pro here and its more stable than the GF3 Ti200 was.

Pluvious - glad its all working. Enjoy it, Shawk

Why do you go for cards with one testicle removed?

Yea, I'm a techie and even wrote OpenGL DLLS for some games, and I'm on many
Nvidia/ATI sites/forums. Same problems, bot users/cards have there share of
issues. One most users hate is when it's 95% their fault.
Or a botched card is given to them, which will happen to some ppl - these
came off an assembly line.

Very, very few instances a card has a hardware flaw....

As said before, get the Omega drivers and enjoy a graphic experience
as never before!

Full Quality, Full Performance... it's sweet!

Though not many games yet incorperate DX9 and titles like Max Pain II
only use Pixel Shaders 2.0 for a few effects ( like the mirrors )
you'll find that playing games will go smooth like hell :-)

What are you talking about? Nvida owners have problems too (not
including the performance issues) I JUST went from Ti4200 to 9800Pro,
so far... smooth sailing... and reviews have been very good on ATI
stability.

Perhaps the people who upgraded didn't know how to DO IT - ie:
uninstall OLD DRIVERS...

Same stupid crap the 3DFX owners said when they changed out their
Voodoos for Nvidia.

If you bought it from a store, I'd take it back and get a 9600 at
least, if no a PRO or XT.

Yes, its better than the 5200 - but not by much. Its 64bit memory is
very damaging. Its slower than the 9000Pro and Ti4200.

Its not too bad of a card for $130... but its half the card of the
$150 ATI 9600 by another brand on the shelf.

Below is a report generated first by futuremark

The box reads "ATI Radeon 9600SE"
So are you saying the SE edition is less than the Pro or just the
9600?
I had hoped I grabbed the right 9600.
Don't tell me I wound up with a weak card :(((((
I cant really afford a 9800PRO but I want SOME bragging rights from my
old Geforce 2TI and certainly the crappy 5200FX I had.

BTW In hardware device manager it lists the ATI Radeon 9600SE twice
(one as a secondary). --see report below--
Is this normal (seeing this is my first ATI card)?

Am I a newbie in computers? No.
Did I unistall the old Nvidia drivers prior to installing the new
card? Yes.
Thanks for the help group!

yeah

what is a SE have to offer what pro can offer?

any ideas???

wabn abuy a new videocard.

Yes, its an ATI card - it did include the Half Life2 Coupon?

SE is half the speed of a NonPro - it doesn't even have a cooler fan
on the GPU.... its memory is 64bit.

It maybe faster than the 5200 you bought (also, most likely a 64bit
version) but the 9600SE is about half as fast as my Ti4200 ($75
online). It is the "5200" for ATI - who needed a $100 DX9 card.

Bragging rights is stupid. I have a 9800Pro, I can get more effects
from game. I don't have a hard on, other than I never would have
bought it - I got it for free.

Its normal for ATI cards to be listed twice - DUAL OUTPUT.

Oh bite me. I am not a n00b, I did a CLEAN install, and the card
keeps crashing in Call of Duty, Never Winter Nights, and other games.
It is NOT user error in this case, it is a case of FAULTY drivers.

Hell, I have installed over 500 cards in different machines, and have
never had so much issues.

LOL, reviewers.. yeah, they get to use the card for a few days, then
they return it. If they get to keep it, then they write a good
review. Imagine that.

You bought about the worst ATI card you could buy, SE stands for Sucker
Edition.

Yep... I had nothing but headaches when I bought my 9800XT... I tried
uninstalling the 3DFX drivers but it didn't help... I took the big
leap, formatted, reinstalled and all is slicker than a cats ass... :)

<snip> <snip>

The radeon 9600SE is rather slow ... but faster as an GF2 ti and yes,
if you would have forked over an extra 20 bucks you would have a Non
Pro... with double speeds. But I guess that it's easy to live with an
9600SE, as the games you play probably will never be the newest of the
newest.

Untill your card is to slow for the games you play, don't upgrade :-)

How do I know if youre a N00b?

Something else might be causing the problem... CPU, Mobo, drivers, the
game itself.

Look at Crimson Skies from M$ - it was pure shit... took over a month
and 3 patches to get the game to work right... with a TNT2 card.
Hell, I have installed over 500 cards in different machines, and have
never had so much issues.

It wasn't the ATI 9600 series.

So should I take back the 9600SE and get a 9600 pro or will a 9600 non
pro be even just as good?
What differences shall I see?
I would like some better quality graphics but not to rip a hole in my
pocket book.
TIA
