My emachines just suffered from sudden death

See if this site helps in putting together a new mobo/cpu combo if that's
the way you choose to go.

Of course you would have to purchase a new XP CD since the Emachine disk
won't be worth a plug nickel. Once the mobo/cpu is installed and al is
connected back up, just use the XP CD to run a Repair install on the drive
you have and you should be back in business. Although your apps/data will
be intact you will have to re-install all the critical updates from the
windows update site.

If you choose to go with a total ground up build, check out these sites
as well:

If the hard drive is still good the OP was to change
components/parts as I did, a Repair install could be done which
re-enumerates devices and the drive can still be used with all
apps/data present as the master boot drive.

I would extract the information first before chancing it booting on a new
MB. eMachines does not provide a way to do the repair install.

Just one last general question: is it generally acknowledged that emachines
and similar low-priced brands have inferior quality and reliability than the
brand-names? I'm trying to decide whether my next computer will be another
try at bargain or should I just fork over and pay for big name?

The quality of even the "Big Names" is not what it used to be. That
said, I'd still go with Dell, but buy from the Small Business division
which should get you USA support and good quality.

Or, if you're looking for a bargain, check out Dell's site for
"refurbs". Those are comps which have been returned for whatever
reason and had whatever was wrong with them fixed. My wife and I both
bought comps this way and were very satisfied.
Thanks again.

You're welcome.
