Help me please. I put a CD-RW in the correct drive and started to burn
somemore music onto it and right when it was almost finished, it froze....And
now my drive wont open again and i can't get my CD out... It was my favorite
CD too. :(
If you can help me i'd really apreciate it. Thanks.

The front cover opens by rotating a little plastic 'cog'. Over time the
points on the cog wear out and after time, it fails to open the cover.
There should be a small hole in the front cover, so insert something like a
straightened out paperclip into that hole which is an emergency release
mechanism.

This should allow you to retrieve your beloved CD....

Then replace the drive, it's not worth getting it fixed, a new one is
cheaper.

the putting the pin in the whole trick to opening the CD does not always
work.

it does not work on all PCs for some reason.

i lost a CD because of this trick.

the drive like swallowed my CD and i had to take a part the drive to get it
back.

Steven

Hey. I aprecciate your advice but i can't find the hole (i'm slow so you
kinda have to be specific). But thanks for trying. :)

Thanks for the info but i don't wanna replace the drive cuz my dad doesn't
know and i don't want him to cuz my dad gets mad at me for stuff that goes
wrong with our computer even if i had no control over it. I know, i know i
should tell him, but i don't like it when he yells at me... I'm hoping that
i'll get some advice thats not expencive and doesn't involve my parents in
anyway... But thanks anyway for trying. :)

Have you tried rebooting? If you have and there is no hole on the front
of the drive (it is very tiny and you have to look closely), then I'm
afraid you will have to tell your dad. A new cd-rw drive can cost as
little $25usd so this isn't the end of the world. If you haven't
rebooted yet, do so and try and open the drive when the computer
restarts but before Windows boots.

Don't feel bad; you were just upset is all. I'm glad you got it sorted.
Thanks for taking the time to let me know.

Four suggestions: Do these in order; proceed to the next item if the one
before doesn't work.

1) There should be a "manual release" hole on the drive (near the eject
button, or near the bottom edge of the cd tray. get a straightened paper
clip, gently insert it into this hole, it should release the mechanism that
controls the tray, and allow you to slide it open manually the rest of the
way.

2) In My Computer, try right-click on the CD icon and then choose "eject".

3) Try a ctrl-alt-del and go to task list in the Task Manager. Click
"End-Task" on whatever programs are running; including the cd-burning
program, note whether it says "Running" or "Not Responding" etc.

4) Otherwise as a last resort do a 'improper shutdown' and pull the plug on
the system....then start it up again.....it may be the only way out, if
"End-Task" doesn't work.
