what that message is telling you is that you either made a change..(or you
opened msconfig did not make a change but did not hit cancel.) Either way,
all you need to do to stop the message is click the box that says 'do not
show this message'..or words to that affect.

Using your link!!
Filename Startup entry
ctfmon.exe CTFMON.EXE
When you run a Microsoft Office XP or Microsoft Office 2003 program, the
file Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon) runs in the background, even after you quit all
Office programs. "Ctfmon.exe activates the Alternative User Input Text Input
Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar. Ctfmon.exe monitors
the active windows and provides text input service support for speech
recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other
alternative user input technologies." [1]
ctfmon.exe is located in "C:\WINDOWS\System32\" when running Windows XP.
[Edit]

As far as editing the registry!!
Start>Run>regedit
this opens registry editor.
at top goto edit. type: msconfig Hit enter key.
look at each find. DO NOT delete any reference to msconfig unless it is in a
"RUN" folder.
read the bottom of the screen.
press F3 to look for next occurrence.

hopefully there is is only one "RUN" entry.

close regedit. reboot. What happens?

Be VERY careful as you are editing the Windows registry. Not something you
want to do very often.

There are Startup?Oesky application software to search for these entries.
I usually use the above described method!

lhanks for the info about CTFMON :) I sure didn't see that much
information..

About the registry .. I think you might have left out a step go to Edit..
type.. where? find? thanks Rainy

regedit, toolbar, edit
in "FIND WHAT" type: msconfig (only the word/text--msconfig) in "Find what"

To 'find' things in the registry, open the registry by clicking on your
start menu button>click on 'run' and type in
regedit
Now, on the toolbar at the top of your screen, click on the 'edit' button,
which opens a drop-down menu When that opens, click on the 'find' option.

That will open a box that you can type in..enter the program or whatever it
is you are looking for and hit 'enter' on your keyboard. It will search for
whatever you typed in. To see if there are more than one entry, after it
found one item, hit 'Find Next' or , you can use the F3 key on your
keyboard. It will continue to search and find all items with the name you
typed in and when there are no more entries, it will say something like,
'finished searching, would you like to try again?'
You can stop the ctfmon from loading in your startup programs, but leaving
it really does not have that big of an effect on your computer.

If you want instructions on how to remove it from your startup tab in
msconfig, post back.

As for the chkdisk, try booting from your cd and let the chkdisk run form
there.

Using your link!!
Filename Startup entry
ctfmon.exe CTFMON.EXE
When you run a Microsoft Office XP or Microsoft Office 2003 program, the
file Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon) runs in the background, even after you quit all
Office programs. "Ctfmon.exe activates the Alternative User Input Text
Input
Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar. Ctfmon.exe
monitors
the active windows and provides text input service support for speech
recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other
alternative user input technologies." [1]
ctfmon.exe is located in "C:\WINDOWS\System32\" when running Windows XP.
[Edit]

As far as editing the registry!!
Start>Run>regedit
this opens registry editor.
at top goto edit. type: msconfig Hit enter key.
look at each find. DO NOT delete any reference to msconfig unless it is
in a
"RUN" folder.
read the bottom of the screen.
press F3 to look for next occurrence.

hopefully there is is only one "RUN" entry.

close regedit. reboot. What happens?

Be VERY careful as you are editing the Windows registry. Not something
you
want to do very often.

There are Startup?Oesky application software to search for these entries.
I usually use the above described method!

google.
but sometimes I forget.. :) and no I don't have nortons.. well I have a
stand alone windoctor.... I have never known how to search registry for
msconfig entries.. I typed nvcpl in run.. and didn't get anywhere.. do
you
mean in the registry.. could you explain further?..

it appears that ctfmon is or could be a windows file or a virus.. I
don't
think this one is the virus.. This problem with msconfig coming up
everytime is really annoying and all the help I have gotten.. was
supposed
to work under normal circumstances.. but not today.. :)... I'm thinking
it
could be a program that is causing this.. but don't have a clue which
one..
thanks Rainy

I don't know about ctfmon. i used to have. I think something to do with
langauge bar.

don't know what nvcpl is? do yuo have norton?

Did yuo search registry for msconfig entries? particularly in "Run"

Rainy,

Delete the whole MSConfig entry.

Right click MSConfig in the right hand pane | Select Delete | Answer Yes
to
the prompt: Are you sure you want to delete this value?

The MSConfig entry might come back, I don't know.

I have done this many times... it still does not go away when windows
boots.. I will try it again... just to be sure! I saved this message
so
I
could let you know what happened.. it did it again after I clicked on
the do not show this message.. and it did anyway.. thanks Rainy
what that message is telling you is that you either made a
change..(or
you opened msconfig did not make a change but did not hit cancel.)
Either way, all you need to do to stop the message is click the box
that says 'do not show this message'..or words to that affect.

Hi Wes.. thanks for the thorough response.. I have changed it to
normal and the utility still does it.. I also rebooted a couple of
times without messing around with msconfig.. to test it.. Rainy

Rainy,

Your msconfig.jpg shows that you are in Selective Startup. That is why you
are getting the Selective Startup message and registry entry. That is why
the registry entry came back.

Open msconfig | General tab | Click Normal startup | Click Apply | Click OK
|
There may be a message that you have to reboot | Click OK or whatever and
reboot
