MSCONFIG selection does not stay after Apply

Here's one thing I've never understood about msconfig. If I uncheck a
program because I don't want it to start, is there any way to make that the
NEW "default" startup configuration? I.e., so that that program never starts
up on boot again.
Or am I forced to use "selective startup" with that program unchecked from
here on out?

What removing a startup item from MSCONFIG does is move it from one key
(like "Run"), and put it in another one (I believe the syntax is RunEx or
something, but I'm on a Win2k box right now and can't check). In other
words, it just kind of keeps it "on ice", and ready to be returned at some
future time.

So, to answer your question, you could try removing it from the item from
the "RunEx" (or whatever it's called) and see if that does it.

THAT does not work either. MSConfig is a poor substitute for Startup items I
found.

Still looking for a truly good working Startup Manager.

They are:

SNMP SERVICE
DEBUGGER
MSN MESSENGER
OFFICE XP SPEECH (ctfmon.exe)
PRINT SCREEN (Gadwin Systems\Printscreen.exe)\
MAILWASHER (Mailwasher 5.01\Mailwasher.exe)

These always show up again even after I deleted them in MSConfig, Startup
and even when I delete them in StartUp Optimizer (a free download)

Simple Network Management Protocol, a Windows component. Are you
sure you do not need this?

Do you mean MDM.EXE, the Machine Debug Manager, or an actual startup
item named DEBUGGER? If it is the latter then this is an item that
is added by a couple of known trojans/worms and you need to scan your
system thoroughly.
MSN MESSENGER

Again there are several known trojans/worms/viruses that use this
name.
OFFICE XP SPEECH (ctfmon.exe)

From Pacman's Portal startup information page at
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

"CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in
Office XP. Ctfmon.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig
when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and
Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you
don't need these features. <snip> Ctfmon can be disabled from Control
Panel, Text & Speech Services. Note - the file will always be located
in the System32 folder, if it is located elsewhere it will likely be a
worm or trojan! Can cause problems with some other programs if left
enabled."

PRINT SCREEN (Gadwin Systems\Printscreen.exe)\

Uninstall Gadwin Printscreen from Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.
It is useless to have it installed if you don't want it to run.
MAILWASHER (Mailwasher 5.01\Mailwasher.exe)

Again, uninstall the program if you don't want it running.

For your possible/probably virus/trojan/worm infestations try at least
one of the following free online scanners:
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Good luck

Ron, Thanks a lot for all this detailed info.

I will go thru it bit by bit and see what happens then.

I will keep this board posted.

Thanks in the meantime for your fine work.
