Hi there,

I go to make some changes in the StartUp tab of the Msconfig. Then when I exit it comes up with an "Access Denied....." error. And something to do with local permissions for one or more services.

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks,

Gordon

Log in with administrative rights.

Barring that - give more information.

Press and hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and then press the
"Pause/Break" key. Let go of both. This is equivalent in Windows XP to
having right-clicked on the "My Computer" icon and chosen "Properties"
from the menu that appears. When the new window appears - ensure you are
under the "General" tab. Is there *anything* in there to indicate you
have a 64-bit version of Windows XP, like the words, "Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition Version"?

Next we will get the edition and version information...

Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name and edition) while the line starting with the word
"version" will give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response
to this message verbatim. No paraphrasing - instead - ensure
character-for-character copying.

Suspecting "Windows XP Home Edition"... But would like verification.

Do you have any HP printers installed?

Here is an efficient way to provide additional information about your
system:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste
the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name), and whatever appears to
be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted
information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.

you might try accessing the
msconfig via safe mode.

No HP printers installed.

I know there's a PML registry key that can corrupt, but none there...

Thanks,

Does msconfig just complain but the changes still take effect?

Did you read that link from Daave and does that apply to your system?

Have you ever had any HP peripheral (printer) software installed?

If you do not have the PML driver, there are other things to check.

What programs are being denied?

That happens to me if I try to disable my anti-virus. My solution is to log in
as Administrator in Safe Mode.

Hi Ron,

It simply says "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes."

Hi Ron, It simply says "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes."

There is sometimes a message box that flashes by too quickly for my eye to
read.

But you should still be able to tell what service was denied by examining the
startup tab, and seeing which service(s) did not change in accordance with your
selection. Or, if it wasn't a startup program, the relevant tab.

Which anti-virus is that where you see this message trying to disable
it?

I 'm not saying it ain't so, I would just like to try it.

Hey Ron,

I haven't tried to change a service....only the startup list.

Avast. You can stop the interface in the startup tab, but you cannot stop the
service from running. The message box reads something like "write access to
registry key denied".

Under XP Pro, the only way I found to disable it was to log into SAFE mode as
administrator. I have not tried to do so under W7.

Is there any way you can tell which of your choices was not acted upon and
share that with us?

Did you try any of the suggestions that I and others have made?

If so, what were the results?

Yes, I've turned off all malware stuff, ran msconfig as adminstrator from the pchelp folder, and sent a printout of the msinfo32 summary.

I can't see anything flash by that indicates which service.

Also, no HP printer on this machine...

Thanks,

Gordon

Yes, I've turned off all malware stuff,

What do you mean by that?
Are there items that you checked or unchecked in the startup tab of
msconfig?
If so, do these items have a name? Or are they just labeled "malware
stuff"?
If these items have a name, what is it?
Are these the items that do not get turned off when you try to do so
with msconfig?

ran msconfig as adminstrator from the pchelp folder,

I have no idea what you mean by this. Please be more specific.

Did you try SAFE mode? If so, which version?

If you tried SAFE mode, did you log in as Administrator, or as a User with
administrator privileges?

No HP printer, but do you have the situation Daave mentioned or have
you ever had an HP device installed. I have an HP printer and the
listed service enabled but do not have this problem.

When you encounter the error making the change, does the change work
in spite of the error message?

Do you see the message when you merely try to change the checkbox, or
only when you click OK/Apply?

If it is not an invasion of privacy what item in the Startup tab are
you trying to change?

It is all items in the Startup tab or a particular item?

What is in the Location field of the afflicted Startup item(s).
HKCM..., KKCU..., c:\...

Are you logging into XP as a user with an Administrator account?

Do you have the same error is you login as Administrator?

Do the configurations in the Services tab work okay?

What AV softwares do you think you have running at the time?

Hey Jose,

Dave's link leads to just that.... a solution to the HP PML registry key deletion to solve this problem.

So far, this is the only viable solution presented, but this machine does NOT have an HP printer......

Hey Ron,

If you go to the pchelp folder and right click on msconfig and use the run as, administrator, that's what I was talking about.

Will try the safe modes out of curiosity, though...

I don't have a "pchelp" folder, so I cannot comment. But this is NOT the same
as running msconfig in SAFE mode after have logged in as the ADMINISTRATOR.
Note that this is NOT the same as logging in as a USER who has administrator
privileges. You must log in as ADMINISTRATOR to reproduce the situation I ran
into.
