Note: When installing each of these Service Packs even though
the status may indicate the installation has completed and may
ask you to restart your PC, keep an eye on the hard drive light
activity or use 'Task Manager' until your PC shows no disk activity
or task manager show the CPU is in a 'Idle' state for at least
30 seconds to 1 minute before restarting/rebooting the PC.

(Restart is required)

6) Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for Windows XP x86, and
Windows Server 2003 x86
http://tinyurl.com/cou4e8
Note: Disregard the title of the article.
Scroll down the web page to the section titled: "Files in Thi
Download"
You want the 32 Bit Windows download file named
NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe
(8.6MB)
(This is the "Family Update" for .Net 2.0 SP2)

7) There is no stand alone .Net Framework 3.0 SP2 download file, so yo
will
not be able to
install the "Family Update" for .Net 3.0 as the Family Update require
that
3.0 SP2 is installed before trying to install the Family Update, and
unfortunately the only way to install .Net 3.0 SP2 is by downloadin
and
installing the .NET 3.5 SP1 update that you are trying to avoid.

If you use a Dial-up connection it could take that long or more.
High speed internet service and the download time will not
be all that bad.

After the download completes the installation does take a while
so you should not use the PC for anything else until the install
completes. Note: When you see the message that the installation
has completed and you are asked to "Reboot/Restart" your PC
wait until you see the hard disk activity stop and stays idle
for at least 1 minute, then you can reboot.

Do you need this update: There is a lot of discussion on
this but if you check the current versions of .NET installed
on your PC (Control Panel, Add/Remove programs) then
based on what versions on .NET you have installed I may
be able to save you some time and disk space.

thanks js & am gonna try & work on this a bit

from the "how to determine..." link below, I get to this portion & already
have a question:

It says, by the red arrows I added, open a previous folder - now sure what
folders it means.

""How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installedTo
determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed, locate the
%systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework folder. To open this folder, you can
paste this address into a Windows Explorer address bar. The following
folders contain the released versions of the .NET Framework:
a.. v3.5
b.. v3.0
c.. v2.0.50727
d.. v1.1.4322
e.. v1.0.3705
Note If you see other folders that have a vN.N.NXXXX format, they may
contain beta versions or pre-released versions of the .NET Framework. Those
versions are outside the scope of this article.
To determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed on a
computer, follow these steps:
1.. >>>>>>>>>>Open any one of the folders in the previous
list.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
2.. Right-click the Mscorlib.dll file, and then click Properties.
3.. Click the Version tab, and then note the file version.
4.. Use the previous list to determine which version of the .NET Framework
is installed on the computer, and then click OK.
Repeat these steps for each version of the .NET Framework on the computer.

OK, know that I have your list the question is:
Just how far/much do you want to update?
For example:
Net Framework 1.1 is now at Service Pack 1
Net Framework 2.0 is now at Service Pack 2
Net Framework 3.0 is now at Service Pack 2

The list above also does not include the Family update
for 2.0 and 3.0

I can supply you with a list of the download file sizes
if you want them.

great, thank you js - please do provide me the file sizes.

what is a determining factor(s) of how far I want to upgrade ?

Get back to tomorrow on your questions,
my eyes are seeing double after a long day
on evaluating motherboards for a PC I plan to build.

Thank you for your patience.

Do me a favor, since you only have a DSL Internet connection, download the
NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe (8.6MB) file mentioned below and see how much time
it takes. Report the time in minutes back to me. Just download and time it,
do not install the Family Update just yet.

<snip>

What you downloaded was a test of the how much time it would take to
download the.
It will fail if you try to install it (which I mentioned not to install), no
harm done.

Now that I know your Internet connection speed
is not all that bad I'll recommend the "bootstrapper"
versions for most of what you need to download.

What is the "bootstrapper" version, basically it's a small
(about 2MB) file that you download and run.
After you start the bootstrapper program it initiates the
download and installation of the .Net service pack over the Internet.

This means you need to remain connected to the Internet
for the entire time required to install the service pack which
could be 20 minutes or more. If this is a problem let me know.

The up side is the bootstrapper only downloads the components
that are need for your PC, so the amount of data/files downloaded
could be less that if you where to download the complete/entire
service pack file to your hard drive.

as always, thanks js.

i googled bootstrapper and not sure from where i need to download it. and
are you saying it will determine all the framework apps i need to add, then
it does .

yes, i can stay on that long - well, the pc will be on as i may be in the
other room

thanks again js and enjoy your weekend

and third time i will block you. if whatever i do bothers you then why read
them

oh, and thanks for all the help

OK, here is what you will need to download and install.

First there is a valuable utility from Aaron Stebner's blog.
"NET Framework setup verification tool"
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8999004.aspx
(See the download instructions on were to download
this file, the second link worked best for me)

Download this .Zip file and extract the file named:
netfx_setupverifier.exe and then run it.

It's been recently updated and now will only show
(in the pull down list) what versions are installed on your
PC more accurately then the Add/Remove listing.

So run it and use it to pick and choose the files you need
to install from the list I've provided below. I am assuming
that you have .Net 1.1 but not .Net 1.1 with Service Pack 1.
(Stebner's utility will verify my assumption). If Stebner's
utility does show .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 then you can
skip that item from the list below.

Note: If all of the 4 steps below, especially step 4 is a bit too much
for you and you have plenty of free disk space on your hard drive,
you can bit the bullet and install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. Do this
by installing the file mentioned in step #1, then skip steps 2 to 4
and start at Step #5 below.

Also not to worry, I will show you in detail what you need to
know about the "Bootstrapper" below, when it's appropriate.

Download links and install in the order listed below:
1) Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (10.2 MB)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4f-088e-40b2-bbdb-a83353618b38&displaylang=en
(Note: there is no bootstrapper download file for this service pack)
Choose the option to save the file to your hard drive,
When the download has complete, double click on the
file named: "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe" to start the install.

2) Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 (23.8 MB - 122.3 MB*)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...58-915b-4eb5-9b1d-10e506da9d0f&displaylang=en
For your PC, scroll down the web page to the section titled:
"Files in This Download" and download the 23.8 MB file named:
NetFx20SP2_x86.exe and then install it.
*** Note: Ignore the note about "KB959209",
in the next step I'll show you how to only download what
you need and not .Net 3.5 since Net 3.5 is currently not installed
on your PC, you don't really need it.

3) Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Family Update:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...54-6450b0212565&displaylang=en&displaylang=en
Note: Disregard the title of the article.
Scroll down the web page to the section titled: "Files in This Download"
32 Bit Windows download File is named = NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe (8.6MB)
Download and install this file.

4) Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
Read my article: http://www.pagestart.com/netframeworkfamilyupdate.html
Scroll down the page to the section titled:
"How to skip NET 3.5 and install only the NET 3.0 SP2 with the 3.0 Family
update"

Your done except for step #6.

5) The quick way (but requires more disk space)
If you have chosen to skip steps 2 thru 4 above, remember step #1
is required using either way.

This is the whole package of updates which also includes
..NET Framework 3.5, read the instructions on this web
page as there are two parts (A & B) you need to do.

A) Install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...2F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en
This "2.8 MB" download file is a "bootstrapper"
and will install only the components you need. It does the
download and install process all at the same time.
Note: Click the "Run" option when prompted.

B) Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...450b0212565&displaylang=en&displaylang=en

Scroll down to the section of the page titled:
"Files in This Download"
Click each of the three download buttons one at a time
starting with NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe (8.6 MB)
When the above install finishes then download/install
NDP30SP2-KB958483-x86.exe (6.9 MB)
and finally the NDP35SP1-KB958484-x86.exe (1.4 MB)

6) Now use the Verification tool I mentioned above, if every
versions verifies your done.

Listen, fool, there's been no need to "block" me three times as I only
changed address ONCE - and that was below, and temporarily, to point out that
despite your immature tauntings YOU were the one who changed ID: AnyISP to
ByteMeWT to StillStruggle, or some such.

And THAT is why I saw your posts - because I can't anticipate and killfile
every possible address you're going to use. Have the decency to stay plonked,
dimwit.

Do you finally get it?

It's good of you to acknowledge at last that I DID help you, even though it
apparently wasn't in enough excruciating detail for you, and didn't answer
every OT question in this group that you were asking. Which for some reason
sent you off the deep end. I can only put it down to medication or mild
psychosis bordering on sociopathy.

Absolutely EOT for me, but feel free to have the last word. I won't read it,
but I'm sure it'll be a scorcher.
