Motherboard, CMOS battery, and recharge...

Wait, when the computer is on, is the battery being charged? I read that
it isn't but I remember reading years ago, it was. I am confused.

Yours is a non-rechargeable lithium coin cell. As Paul has said, there
would be a diode which prevents it from being charged. Old
motherboards (486 and earlier) had rechargeable 3.6V NiCd batteries.
Is the battery doing anything when the PSU is still on when the machine is off?
Because I always turn off the PSU when the machine is off.

I don't know. I would think that it would make sense for the +5VSB
standby supply to power the CMOS RAM. In any case you could experiment
by running without the battery for a few days or so.
Yeah, but it hasn't been updated since June 18th, 2004 13:27. Are you
sure it is usable under newer systems?

I checked the list of supported hardware monitor ICs. Your Winbond
W83627EHF chip is included.
I will check again later today since I will be turning the machine off
again. :D

Ah OK. So basically, I need to match the battery voltages.

NO, see my prior post you cannot use any flashlight bulb to
get a reliable indication on a small lithium coin cell. Any
cell when asked for more current than it can provide will
have a voltage depression which is a false indication.

Such lithium cells are subject to such a slight load on a
board that it's not like testing a flashlight battery where
it's probably dead if you left the flashlight on. Rather
the cell barely dips below a threshold value which is
indiscriminable with such an excessive load as a flashlight
bulb (even a tiny lower current bulb). The only type of
bulb that might be suitable is if you had a single LED with
a known forward voltage spec.

I will check again later today since I will be turning the machine off
Hmm, my computer actually remember the CMOS settings tonight after 11.5
hours of downtime. However, I left the PSU on. Hmm! I will keep the PSU
on for the next few days and see if anything changes.
