With many newsreaders you can also choose to download a particula
newsgroup for offline reading. Note the word "choose".
Offlin
reading has the advantage that you are disconnected from th
internet, and thus impervious to evil things
I use the offline download. This means about 10 minutes per da
connection time at 56k baud to handle something like 20 newsgroups
some of which have high traffic volume. This also means I ca
reexamine my replies before transmitting them, after recoverin
from my initial indignation, and then edit or delete them

I only use any type of newsgroup about 3-5 times per year. In othe
words, any program I would download would be a waste of space.
Admittedly, I haven't worked with any newsgroup software in...years.
I simply use this because I do not have to download the slightes
thing

Let's see if I can clarify. I realize that I am using usenet
but I do not want to have a newsgroup sent to me every day so
would much rather just check it whenever I feel like it in
forum format. Does that make sense to you
That statement makes it fairly clear as to what th
misunderstanding is. What you have in mind is subscribing to
"mailing list" where the individual messages can be sen to you
the subscriber, as they are sent or can be accumulated and sen
to you in "digest" form. Sometimes those mailing list ar
"gatewayed" to a newsgroup on Usenet, but that is far fa fro
always being the case. Those are "mailing lists" and ver
definitely are not Usenet, but that is what you just described
We who follow newsgroups in Usenet use various software fro
Microsoft, Netscape, Mozilla, Xnews, and others too numerous t
mention to read newsgroups. You are using a web interface t
simulate what our software does and it does it poorly. Googl
also has such a web interface and its design flaws are als
causing problems whenever people use it
In short, try using a true newsreader such as Thunderbird, fo
example, which is available for Mac, linux, & MS operatin
systems. Then you will begin to understand what the true Usene
experience is. Give it a test drive. You have nothing to lose
