Hi Jon, Yes I am logged on as administrator and no I do not see favorite
when typing 'dir' in CMD.
This puzzles me has I have tried everything without getting the errors when
creating favorites folder(see replies). Also, now I get another issue where
view>explore bar>folders gets automatically selected when opening a window
in XP. I noticed this after typing regsvr32 /i shell32.dll in 'Run'. So I
went back to do a uninstall (/u) with no luck. Any advise for how to resolve
these 2 issues.

Hi Ramesh, thanks for replying. When I type %userprofile%\favorites in
Start/Run I get Error: this file does not have program associated with if for
performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control
panel. Any ideas?

Did you ever answer Ramesh *first* question? <eg>

(BTW I have snipped the piece of his post which allowed you
to avoid answering it.)

I suspect that your Favorites folder has moved from its usual
location so all this work at trying to make the %USERPROFILE%
possibility work would be for nought.

If you do actually have a working Favorites menu and are afraid
to go into the Registry here are some keystrokes which would allow
you to capture the *real* folder name (e.g. the equivalent of the one
you would find in the above registry value that Ramesh requested):

<excerpt from="previous post">
Keystrokes for any IE: Alt-a,L,CursorLeft,Menu,O,Alt-V,o,U
(Notes: L assumes that that selects Links; CursorLeft won't be needed
if Links is empty.)

Explanation: use Links folder's right-click menu to open an Explorer
window for that subfolder then Go Up to the parent folder (i.e. Favorites)
</excerpt>

Once you have an Explorer window open with Favorites selected
copy the path out of its Address bar and paste it in a reply.
Then we will know where your Favorites folder *really* is located.

Hi Robert,
My regedit displays: Favorites REG_EXPAND_SZ %userprofile%\favorites.
As for advises below:
Explanation: use Links folder's
There are no links folder's, just greyed out 'Links' on menu bar in windows
explorer.
Advise 2:

There is no magic path to favorites in windows Explore Address bar,
displaying no other than: C:\Documents and Settings\Costa

(and to be honnest with you I dont really understand your commands)

Yes. I see now that you had answered that in a later post. (Oops.)

Are there any Favorites listed at all?

Ok. Looks as if you have opened an Explorer window at %USERPROFILE%
How did you do that?
(and to be honnest with you I dont really understand your commands)

Not even the mouse click version in my explanation? <eg>
BTW provided you can see *any* entries in the Favorites menu
(That's what Alt-a shows.) you could right-click, Properties
on one, select its General tab, and use the Location: field value
to achieve the same ends as my keystrokes. The keystrokes
are simpler and faster and work provided there is a subdirectory
in Favorites. The subfolder wouldn't have to be Links.

However, I have now reread the whole thread and don't think
we are dealing with a moved folder after all. I think that Ricky's
idea is correct. Let's try refining Jon's technique for looking
for that folder and its attributes. Try entering this instead of
just dir :

attrib /s /d favo*

(That assumes you are doing it in a command window
at the correct directory level. If you're not sure enter
this command first:

cd /d %USERPROFILE%

)

Note that we are still in a diagnosis phase.
I won't have any idea for repair for you until I understand
your symptoms better. So the clearer you can make
those the easier it will be for us to make a helpful suggestion.

Costa,

Shell32.dll is a vital system DLL and registering it does not cause the
behavior that you explain. Also, unregistering the Shell32.dll is not
recommended. For the Explorer bar issue, try closing all browser windows.
Open one instance of IE, and then close the Explorer bar, and then close
Internet Explorer window. If that does not help, clearing the toolbar layout
REG_BINARY helps. Here is the fix:

this resets the Toolbar positions as well.
