Except for .DOCX files.

Nope - the new version 3 WILL open docx files. Natively. Unlike Office 2007
which won't open ODF documents natively at ALL

its not even close

Correct, they are not equal. Openoffice provides a heck of alot more
value than MS Office because it has normal menus which makes it much
less confusing and quicker for the user to interact with, and for the
price tag it does offer alot more value.

By your logic.
Idiot.

Hey idiot - NOBODY cares if Office 2007 opens ODF documents. It doesn't
matter that MS Office deals with any of Open Office files. Most of the
world uses MS Office. Open Office must provide MS compatability to try to
keep up and get users to use their product.

You need more medication.

Remember, Ubuntu is FREE and NOBODY wants it. Open Office is FREE and Most
don't want it. That should tell you all you need to know about it.

Again, NOBODY cares if Open Office will open anything Microsoft. You may be
talking 100 users!! BFD.

I got an .odf document today from a client. Oops. Fortunately, I have
Open Office.

Keep telling yourself that.
Most of the
world uses MS Office.

Most of the world uses toilet paper. Your point?

They do.

LOL! IBM, in conjunction with Canonical, is releasing their new
computers with Lotus Symphony, Ubuntu and Open Office on them. Big oops
on your part, little boy:

No, you can start apologizing for calling IBM a nobody or are you man
enough?

Ohh...calling names....thats a good arguement for ya, you resort to name
calling when you have lost a arguement ? no one said anything about ODF,
which is used by what, MABY 1% of the population, and last I looked ODF
lost the standards battle, What WAS said was that OpenOffice is as good
as Office 2007, which it clearly isnt.

Ya know, if you would quote to whom you are replying, we could know more
about what the hell you're talking about.

For most people's needs, Open Office is more that adequate and in Spain
almost obligatory being as a retail copy of Office 07 Ultimate goes for
over ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The OP is posting trough a leech server. If you look at his posting Properties you
will see that he is using usenet.gateway and look at his newsreader and user agent
which will also explain more clearly. I just ignore all these leech posts which are
showing up in great numbers lately.

BTW. You were correct with your reply to the OP. Unfortunately these leech posts all
do this.

That sounds about right. You install Open Sores software so it would make
sense for you. For 99.999999% of the world, OO is worthless.

Keep telling yourself that.

I do.

Most of the world uses toilet paper. Your point?

I made the point and it's correct. Do you need reading comprehension
classes? If so do a GOOGLE search.

They do.

Just passing on what I've read:

http://blogs.computerworld.com/review_of_final_openoffice_3_why_buy_microsoft_office

" OpenOffice works with an extremely wide variety of formats,
including the OpenDocument Format (ODF) 1.2 standard, as well as
documents created in Microsoft Office 2007 and Office 2008 for the
Mac. You can even export files to PDF.

It won't, however, work with the newest Office 2007 formats such as
..docx. At the moment, that's not a significant drawback, because those
formats are rarely used. However, in the future this could cause some
problems, so I'm hoping Office 2007 formats will soon be handled as
well."

And that review was WRONG.

I have Word2007 and I just installed OpenOffice3... OO definitely
opens .DOCX files.

OpenOffice writer will prepare a document that can be saved as Word (pre 2007) and who the hell need the Word 2007 file format anyway!
Unfortunately, many users of Office do not have the software, or skill, to read a Word document sent to them in the new 2007 format.

Well that blog is COMPLETELY wrong - version 3 of OO will open docx files
natively....

Makes you wonder whether there's any backhanders there doesn't it? I mean,
how can someone who purports to be a specialist get that SO wrong?

If they have the new version of OO (3) they can.....
