Greetings --

And if you unknowingly bought a stolen car that was later
confiscated by the authorities to be returned to its lawful owner,
would the car's manufacturer be obligated to _give_ you a replacement?
Perhaps it's time you learned that the real world is not a warm and
fuzzy place, and that life isn't "fair."

And there's no need to lose your data. Back it up before
replacing your OS.

they have made the install process. I understand wanting to protect
their investment but this is crazy I hope Bill Gates and his money
mongers get taken to the bank with these law suits. And for you MVP's
stop being such jerks and actually help someone instead of carring the
banner for microsoft or are you guys on the payroll to? If Linux was a
standard believe me I would switch in a second.
 
Man, you guys are a touchy bunch. Leave the guy alone, its his opinion and if I was a betting man--he probably started this thread to get you people all rilled up. He's got some pretty good answers from you, that he probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise

Do a repair install using the XP disk ( in the install section of the retail
disk) and you will not lose any data (if things go right , lol ) Jym

You'll lose all your desktop...and probably the start menu. You'll
hafta re-create all that...a royal PITA.

matching key of the original install?

Losing the data isn't the issue. He's already stated that he does
regular backups.

He'll lose all his settings...programs...drivers, etc.

You should know this.

Where did you get that from ? I've done it numerious times and all that will
be lost will be updates. Jym
 
I like many other people here seem to have some of the same problems with boot-legged xp. I believe that most of us are honest folks who got taken advantage of by bad business people. There's a utility out there that can read your current key...and
another to change it to the one that you just purchased.

After that, you should be able to grab the service pack.

More than likely, the key you have was legal when you bought it. But
it got pirated...so MSFT blocked it for the sp1 download...and wrote a
utility for those who had to replace it.

You can do it with ANY retail XP cd that has a proper number key. Jym

Actually, I know from experience that he will _not_ lose all of

Change the Product Key?
That article only applies if BOTH original AND new Product Key are
Volume License.
If Trent OP buys another copy, it is almost certainly going to be
retail and your reference does not apply.

No, that is why a Repair Installation works so well for this
circumstance.

Read the post from others.
Get your facts straight, that utility will only work if both original
and new are identical versions.
Also if the OP does not know, the installation is most likely a stolen
Volume License. and it was probably never legal on that computer.
Read back the last year, you will see this is fairly common and the
fix for being robbed is to buy another.

blocked from updating to SP1 and I supplied the link for changing the key in

A repair install will not lose data or settings either. Follow the link

Quite true. Due to the nature of what I do I test a lot of new hardware and
software and when you do that, things don't always go as planned. I find
myself doing quite a few repair installs and I can't remember losing any
drivers or settings. I keep all the upgrades on cd and install from there
afterwards. Not even video card or sound drivers are ever lost. If I have
the latest NVidia driver installed before the repair, it is still there
afterwards.
