Microsoft is pushing ie 8 in windows update now

I recently had the experience of working with a laptop whose screen was
tattooed with
"Microsoft Windows FD Deluxe"

It was a fairly slick pirated version, which running the latest Malicious
Software Removal tool quickly revealed.

I had some difficulties trying to update it with a legal copy, and, in the
end, backed it up, formatted, and reinstalled XP Pro and Office 2003 Pro
from scratch.

I handed the machine to a courier--never spoke to the owner (who is from
Kenya.) I doubt he thinks I did him a favor.

I didn't put back the pirate copy of PageMaker he had installed.

Sounds like a sensible policy to me. After all if one went to their local
Doc
with something particularly nasty - even terminal. I doubt he`d refuse
treatment on grounds of being an illegal. That would be unethical.

I hasten to add my copy of Windows is genuine ;)

All right--I saw a headline about that and never read the story. Now I'll
have to go look for it in order to be sufficiently educated to make sense
out of this group!

But it is broke.,
The hackers are getting far more sophisticated. Get the newer version, it
is safer.

I like that - very nice touch. If you ever decide to change vocations in life
don`t hesitate to let me know Bill . Having said that I think (him up there)
has decided your mission in life would be better served as an IT doctor. He
made a wise decision with that. Two questions arising:

1. Any ideas what the FD might have meant? AND

2. Did you pass the pirated onto big Bil`s organisation for investigation?

Hello JJ

In spit of my cynical comments on here - nothing more than light hearted
banter designed to stimulate comment. Advice on IE8? Stick with the program.
We all tend to be resistant with change - particularly on the UI front. What
is important is you understand what`s going on under the bonnet. IE6 has more
security holes than a colander which is why we have seen IE7 and later IE8.
MS may not get it right first time round but they TRY - very hard. I`m sure
you and hubby will benifit in the long run.

Hi all,

Here the latest http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/05/01/netherlands.royals.queen.car/index.html#cnnSTCText

Lucky i was not there, but all the festivities where canceled and if the
queen and family will be so free again next year we will see.
This queensday party was always very open, contact with all the people,
for 50 years i think.

You are right Stu. And your comments are not cynical. They express my
thinking and you put it with words. (BTW, your posts make me remember our old
friend Plun (I wish he come back, between you and him, you guys, really spice
this NGs ) ) Keep it up Stu.
I'm sure our friend Tom enjoy our comments, and probably keep our Guru and
Diplomat (Bill S.) breaking his routine. Do you agree Bill? ;-)

BTW, yesterday I install first IE8, no problen there. I use downloading to
the desktop, clean the temps etc. etc. exiting allmost my task bar, and boala
was done. Even, I refuse to update 34 (or more, because I have hiding another
bunch) updates waiting since last year, and wthout them, IE8 went and install
on the new house.

After a couple of hours, getting to know the new UI, I decide to install NIS
2009, and same, no problem there. Actually this time they make it really easy
to install, and without any hicups from Vista, the Windows Defender disaper.
I read before, some suites cancel WD so they use there own anti-spyware.
Well, thanks for the memorys WD :-)

Any way Stu, that is all, keep yourself out of problems, and keep the Thai
woman happy.

Take care

Well I downloaded it. Not crazy about the new tool bar, and I'll have to
fiddle with the font, as it seems a bit sqwished. Oh well, it's in and I'll
fiddle with it tonight when I have time. God I hate change. LOL JJ

I did a disk cleanup, emptied all the temp files and also did a defrag.
Will run a virus scan later, as I did one yesterday, but want to be safe.

Thanks to all for the help. :-)

I don't know why the name. If you search on that name, you'll find a number
of torrents offering it up. I believe the deluxe comes from having some
other bits added in--probably Office.

I didn't bother to tell Microsoft about the availability of this pirate
version--they are aware of it--and the Malicious Software Removal tool will
disable it. And I didn't turn in the owner of the machine--I'd been asked
to troubleshoot a vaguely defined performance issue, and I figured getting
him legal with both Windows and Office was sufficient help for him, and for
Microsoft as well.

Good luck JJ.

I'm as resistive as you are - still using IE6 despite the best advice of
folk like Bill.

Trouble is, I've never been able to get on even with Firefox - I simply
don't want to spend the hours and hours that seem to be necessary to trying
to find a way of making it do what I want. When I imported my favourites
from IE6, Firefox seemed to enjoy mixing them all up according to some
system of its own, and to reorganise them within its list would take me
hours of work. So I just don't use it. And I still don't understand the
point of tabbed browsing.

So I have this nightmare vision of irrevocably installing IE8, loathing the
result, and then never being able to browse comfortably again. So for me,
it's not so much a matter of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'; it's more
like: 'if it's broke, don't try to fix it and make it more broke'.

Well Alan, hubby and I tried it for 3 days and neither of us liked it, so out
it came today. I'm finding quite a few others who are not satisfied with it
either, very slow.

Maybe someday in the future I'll try it again, but so far I have had no
problems with the old 6, so I'll just stick with it for now. Neither of us
have the time to figure out all the new fang dangled stuff it does, and
truthfully, I like things simple.

It didn't take long to install or anything like that, we just did not like
some of the so called new features. Oh well, it will be there if we decide to
install it again, but for now, I'll stick with what I have.

Take care, enjoy your weekend. JJ

Thanks for reporting back JJ.

Do I understand correctly then, that it installs in ADDITION to IE6, rather
than as a replacement for it? That might make a difference - I'd assumed
that at the end of the process I'd have lost IE6, but it seems that isn't
the case?
Neither of us have the time to figure out all the new fang dangled stuff
it does

Yes, that's exactly the problem. I simply don't want all those extra options
cluttering everything up.

Alan D

Hi Alan..I thought the same thing, that you would lose whatever you had in
there, but not the case. When we removed it, it went right back to 6 and when
others have removed it, they went right back to 7.

I made sure I read up on it a little, and saw on a couple of blogs where
folks uninstalled it as well and went back to what they had. I just went to
add/remove and out it came. After doing that, I did a cleanup and a defrag,
then a virus scan, all went just fine.

Only problem I had was 8 made my taskbar and their icons very tiny, so I had
to go into control panel..display..appearance and make the caption buttons
larger. All is fine now. Have a great day. JJ

I wonder about the complete absence of any evidence of malice on the part of
the driver--whether perhaps he had a stroke or other medical "accident" that
precipitated this final accident. I'm sure they will do an autopsy--perhaps
that will show something?

Hi Bill,

The policemen that spoke to him just after he was crashed, when he was
still by his positive claims that he did it at purpose and try to kill
the Royall family. Dont know the reasons he had to do so.
A lunatic, with such a little car to crash against a Bus, i think he was
the only won that was hurt if he did not hit all that people first!!
Terrible it was, today the Queen was in the public again, we think on
the 4 of Mei back to all the people that died during WW2 and after that.
A ceremonial at "The DAM" of Amsterdam and the whole country is quiet
for 2 minutes to think of back of them!
Tomorrow we party again that your people and from a lot of other
country's, free us from Hitler and his friends!
So you know a little bit what we here up to, Bill! ;)

Kind regards,
*< TOM >*<

Thanks - I had not heard about the statement to the police. Indeed we all
need to pause to recall the sacrifices made in all the wars, and I hope to
resolve to work towards fewer in the future. Then we could all have a
massive party!
