I just saw the yellow shield and was wondering what is going on since it is
not the 2nd tuesday of the month

I click on it and guess what is there- ie8
there is also an update to Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility tool sp2
one for ms outlook 2003 junk email filter
one for windows live messenger (if you have it)

also there is kb955430 for vista to enable you to download and install
future updates
robin

here is a cute one
I am in the process of doing the security updates for a new dell laptop
running xp pro sp3
there Is no option for ie7 only ie8
Microsoft thinks it is funny since it it is basically forcing you to install
ie8 on a new computer :P
oh do not get me wrong I actually like ie8 over ie7 but I still use firefox
for most of my browsing

Hi Robin,

Maybe the following links will be useful:

How to solve InteÑnet Explorer 8 installation problems
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949220>

How do I uninstall or remove Internet ExploreÑ 8?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

If you do not wish to install IE8, have a look at the following utility:

Toolkit to Disable Automatic DeliveÑy of Internet Explorer 8
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...28-5806-4ba6-9e4e-8e224ec6dd8c&displaylang=en>

Before following the steps outlined by MS, consider a direct download
from their site (manual install). After three failures with the
yellow shield and Start > Microsoft Update, that worked for me. It is
annoying that often with those notifications, the install segment
shield comes up hours, if not days, after the download. That's
happened many times with the monthly updates, but not with Win Defender.

IE7 was opening instantly for me, maybe 3-4 seconds total to the home
page. IE8 isn't as slow as when it was initially released, but is
taking a good 10-15 seconds.

FWIW, I believe that 955430 is the "enabler" for Vista SP2. Not certain of
that, but I think that's what it is.

Microsoft is distributing IE8 even to non-genuine--I.e. pirated versions of
Windows. Their view is that this is consistent with their clear policy of
distributing security patches to all the Windows-based machines out
there--legal or not.

I'm impressed by that decision--and it colors my thinking about whether to
upgrade--I'm not holding back...

I'm not sure what might be involved in this kind of performance issue. One
test I'd suggest is to run IE8 in no add-ons mode, just to rule out the
add-ons.

start, all programs, accessories, system tools.

20 seconds with most add-ons, 15 from system tools on repeat tries.
4-5 secs for Opera and FF with add-ons. This morning IE7 was in that
4-5 sec range consistently.

One thought that I've had about this is whether it is waiting on some
external resource--the server that validates downloads and blocks bad sites,
for example--can't recall what they call that feature...

I'll try some other machines--all I have handy at the moment are Windows 7
build 7000, and that's pretty ancient, in terms of IE8--anyway--it opens
with the NY Times site in a few seconds.

I just read a confirmation of this in a blog entry about Vista SP2.

955430 is the servicing stack update which allows for installation of the
OS, and more reliable installation of updates.

Sounds like a sensible policy to me. After all if one went to their local Doc
with something particularly nasty - even terminal. I doubt he`d refuse
treatment on grounds of being an illegal. That would be unethical.

I hasten to add my copy of Windows is genuine ;)

I do notice it takes a few seconds to close
oh you can close the browser but you get an hour glass for about 2secs then
it releases

Hi Test team ;)

Here my results:

clean (first time)

IE8 7 seconds
Chrome 4 seconds
Firefox 4 seconds

Second time:

IE8 4 seconds
Chrome 2 seconds
Firefox 3 seconds

Mine's taking ~8 secs from clicking the desktop icon to opening the
browser, then another 10 secs while the framework is there but the
page content is blank (white), until it loads yahoo's home page.
I defragged after install. XP/SP3

Ok folks, I'm a bit reluctant to download IE8, as believe it or not, I am
still at IE6. Is there anything special I should be aware of going from 6 to
8?

My system is XP Pro SP3..NO Vista or WD and I run Avast for my AV and
SpywareBlaster.

Hubby downloaded 8 last night, and he said it seems ok but a bit confused
with the tool bar, but searching around on how to use it. If he uses its
favorites, too many things come up, so he just uses the normal favorites as
before.

Thanks for any help or suggestions. JJ

I try to keep things as simple as possible, don't like all the bells and
whistles.

Go back to the parade.

The royal family is wondering about you.

Watch out for crazy drivers.

That is my motto too, so unless it is absolutely necessary, I just might skip
it. Last thing I need is a bunch of new things to adjust! :)

Hi Engel.

Put another way. If you don`t need to fix it .. it ain`t broke. Elementary
my dear Watson ............
I think Tom must have one of those super fast gaming machines. In the time
it takes IE8 to load on this machine, I can take the missus to work, do the
shopping, collect the kids from school and have dinner on the table by the
time she gets home. That`s on a good day. On a bad day she beats me! ;);)
