Not hard at all, if you knew Java, and had access to a trasmitter and
antenna like Deep Space Network.

I know nothing about hacking, but how easy would it be for someone besides
me to hack into the Spirit on Mars and cause it to tip over?

"Please, send in every dollar you can to send George to Mars."

Likely simple as not many bothered to consider that a risk, I bet.
However, you might spend years trying various frequencies and codes,
and that would exceed the device's life span many times over, and you
would need equipment which I doubt you have to transmit and receive
the signals. :)

No, they will hack it on mars and soon we will be getting spammed with:
"Beautiful martian women for you."

and

"My planet was taken over by moon creatures, and I have hidden, but I
need your help to get my gold off the planet."

...speaking of which, the latest announced plans pretty much kill
everything except manned missions. While I'd like to see those too,
there's a lot of good fundamental science about to be thrown out the
window for political ends.

Put Bush, Congress, and Senate on the Moon. Then let's see how they feel
about the necessary fundamental science to support getting them back.

Of course, it would be a darn shame if they couldn't come to a consensus
before their oxygen ran out.

A couple of years ago the Falung Gon hacked into and took over a
Chinese communication satellite. They controlled it for about a
WEEK!

It would make us Brits feel better about Beagle 2 being stuck on its
side at the bottom of a crater, or whatever it is they think has
happened to it. :-)

That's what happened! Ralsky was relaying his spam through it
so Beagle got SPEWSed!!!.

You have only the Chinese goobermint's word that's who did it.
That'd be like us accusing the Scientologists of doing so.
Not bloody likely.

My money says the Chinese staged it.

Quite a few radio hams communicate via VHF/UHF signals using the moon as a
reflector.

Mars is 60 times further away. The square cube law is not your friend.
They also can just about detect signals from spacecraft en route
to Mars. Not sure about signals from the rovers, though. I'll bet some of
them will give it a try. Sally

Very, very doubtful. *

How long did it take? And did they have inside info?

Actaully I have only the word of the Western News Agencies whose report
I read, I do not even know what their source(s) were.

You make a good point.

Thanks.

folk's at jpl are on hunt ...

it's worth weeks o work ..

it'd better not be you .

Er, make that more than 140 times further. Amusingly, I mixed my units. *

I'm trying to figure out how the square cube law, ordinarily used in
estimating bone diameter from a critter's mass, is related to inverse-
square propagation of radio waves.
